The Ministry of Education and Training requested that schools finish their individual activities before 8:00 a.m. to participate in the general ceremony.

According to Minister Nguyen Kim Son, the opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year takes place in a special context: The whole country celebrates the 80th anniversary of National Day; carries out the "reorganization of the country"; organizes Party Congresses at all levels... For the education sector, this is also an occasion to celebrate 80 years of tradition. Not only to look back on the development journey, but also to be more deeply aware of the mission and responsibility of creating people, building the country, and integrating in the new era.

The meaning of the opening ceremony became even more profound when 52,000 educational institutions across the country connected online, combined with live television, with the presence of top leaders, to spread the belief, spirit and determination to bring Vietnamese education to new heights.

Along with the national opening ceremony, major localities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) have completed preparations and are ready for the new school year. Hanoi entered the new school year with 2,954 kindergartens and primary schools, serving more than 70,500 classes with about 2.327 million students, an increase of nearly 60,000 students compared to last year. The whole sector has about 129,300 staff and teachers, more than 68,900 classrooms and 29 vocational education and continuing education centers serving nearly 57,000 students. Notably, this year the city has 43 new schools, including 27 public and 16 private. At the same time, it is implementing a plan to recruit nearly 1,000 teachers for high schools.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong affirmed: "We have completed the review, supplemented facilities, recruited additional teachers and promoted digital transformation in management to ensure the best conditions for more than 2.3 million students entering the new school year."

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, this school year the city has more than 2.5 million students. It is expected to put into use about 1,700 new classrooms from the budget and socialized sources, ensuring that 100% of students have enough standard learning space. The sector continues to implement the 2018 General Education Program, expand teaching two sessions/day, promote digital transformation, apply AI, enhance STEM and career education.

Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Hieu affirmed: “The achievements in the 2024-2025 school year will be a solid foundation for Ho Chi Minh City to continue to affirm its leading role in the country in educational innovation. With careful preparation from the industry and schools, the opening ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City promises to create a favorable start for a new school year full of expectations.

Education sector enters new school year with 10 key tasks

The 2025-2026 school year is the first year to implement the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress. This is also the year the whole country implements the Resolution of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training development and amended laws in the field of education and training.

The Ministry of Education and Training has issued a nationwide schedule for the 2025-2026 school year. Students will return to school at least 1 week before the opening day, while grades 1, 9 and 12 will return to school at least 2 weeks earlier. Localities must report on preparations before September 10, the first semester review before January 31, 2026 and the school year summary before June 25, 2026.

The Ministry of Education and Training has identified the theme of the 2025-2026 school year as “Discipline - Creativity - Breakthrough - Development” with 10 key tasks. In particular, the sector focuses on perfecting institutions, improving the quality of education at all levels, effectively implementing the 2018 General Education Program, expanding two-session teaching/day, developing national standard schools and boarding schools in disadvantaged areas.

Along with that is ensuring fairness in access to education, developing the teaching staff, investing in facilities, comprehensively innovating education, promoting digital transformation and administrative reform. The industry will also launch emulation movements, spreading advanced examples and replicating effective models.

Regarding general education, Official Dispatch 4555/BGDĐT-GDPT sets out 5 key tasks, emphasizing the effective implementation of the new program, enhancing comprehensive education, promoting digital transformation in school management, closely monitoring and linking education with local action programs.

The 2025-2026 school year is both a special year for the opening ceremony of the entire sector and a pivotal year for the implementation of many innovative policies. The simultaneous implementation of the 2018 General Education Program, the expansion of two-session teaching per day, ensuring equity in access to education and the requirement for digital transformation pose significant challenges, especially in disadvantaged areas. In addition, the pressure on class size, facilities, teaching staff and the requirement for innovative teaching methods require the synchronous participation of the whole society.

The new school year also requires the creation of a safe, healthy, and friendly educational environment. Schools are required to strictly implement regulations on preventing school violence and build a close coordination mechanism between schools, families, and society in managing and educating students.

The Ministry of Education and Training also emphasizes the improvement of life skills, education of life values, cultural qualities, and sense of civic responsibility for the young generation.

At the conference to summarize the 2024-2025 school year and deploy tasks for the 2025-2026 school year, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized: human resources are the most important factor, deciding the success or failure of each country. In particular, education and training play a particularly important role in the rapid and sustainable development of the country. The Prime Minister affirmed: "More than ever, it is necessary to focus and prioritize all resources on education and training".

The Prime Minister also pointed out that in the coming school year, the entire sector needs to strongly change its thinking and approach: from considering education and training as the sector’s own task to the common task of the entire political system, the entire people and the entire society. At the same time, it is necessary to shift from the goal of equipping knowledge to comprehensively developing the capacity and qualities of learners.

It can be said that the 2025-2026 school year is an important pivotal year for the entire education sector to continue implementing Resolution No. 29 on fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education and training. Careful preparation from facilities, teaching staff, curriculum to the spirit of innovation in management and teaching methods will be an important foundation for Vietnamese education to enter a new stage of development, modernity, integration, and maintaining its identity.
