US: Power grid increasingly vulnerable to attack

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng08/04/2024

The North American Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC) says the U.S. power grid is increasingly vulnerable. NERC executives say the grid’s physical and cyber weaknesses, or those in software or computer drives, are now vulnerable to cybercriminals.

Statistics show that the number of cyberattacks on the power grid has increased from 21,000 to 22,000 at the end of 2022 to 23,000 to 24,000 in 2023. According to NERC, geopolitical conflicts, including those in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, have significantly increased the cyber threat to the North American power grid. Regulators believe that the upcoming US presidential election also poses a risk of increasing the likelihood of attacks on the grid.

Physical attacks on the grid have remained high since 2022, with about 2,800 reports of shootings, vandalism and other attacks on the grid in 2023, according to NERC. About 3% of those attacks resulted in outages or other operational issues.
