Bought pig's head to treat friends at home, 52 year old man in critical condition

On July 18, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases informed about the admission and treatment of a male patient (52 years old, from Thanh Hoa ) who was hospitalized in critical condition due to streptococcal infection, pneumonia and cirrhosis.

Through investigation, about 10 days before being admitted to the hospital, this male patient bought pig's head to prepare to treat his friends. One day after preparing the pig's head, the patient developed a high fever and hemorrhagic rashes on his skin. After that, the patient was taken to a medical facility near his home and transferred to Thanh Hoa General Hospital in a state of high fever, impaired consciousness, low blood pressure, intubation, mechanical ventilation and blood filtration.

Although the patient received intensive care for a week, his health condition did not improve, progressing to multiple organ failure and severe blood clotting disorder. Blood culture results showed Streptococcus suis bacteria (swine streptococcus bacteria).

The patient was then transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in critical condition. Doctor Phan Van Manh, Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that after examination, it was determined that the patient was infected with streptococcus suis during the processing.

"Swine streptococcus disease usually causes two main clinical conditions: bacteremia and meningitis. This male patient had a spinal tap and ruled out meningitis. However, the bacteremia progressed very quickly, causing many serious consequences such as blood clotting disorders, prolonged multiple organ failure, making treatment difficult and time-consuming," said Dr. Phan Van Manh, warning that any healthy person can be infected with streptococcus when exposed to the pathogen.
