Hot weather and increased demand for export and processing have pushed up coconut prices. Many warehouses are quoting a wholesale price of VND180,000/dozen (12 fruits), an increase of VND50,000-60,000 compared to the beginning of the year.
Currently, fresh coconut retail price fluctuates between 15,000-17,000 VND/fruit. Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh (Ward 3, Vinh Long City) said that the purchasing power of fresh coconut has increased dramatically, while the supply is scarce due to the fruit hanging season (off-season), causing the price of coconut to nearly double compared to the same period last year.
With 10 hectares of coconut trees, Mr. Tran Van Ung (Thanh Tan commune, Mo Cay Bac district, Ben Tre province) said that during the main season, he can harvest more than 1,000 fruits per hectare, but during the off-season, he can only harvest about 700-800 fruits.
Last time he sold 180,000 VND/dozen - the highest price ever. However, coconut production has decreased by 50%, so despite the good price, gardeners still have very few coconuts to sell.
