This shield was specifically designed for untrusted programs downloaded from the internet, and was later extended to web browsers as an extension, as well as Microsoft Office to protect users from threats hidden in Word, Excel and other suites of programs.
Microsoft announced in 2023 that it would stop providing this security shield in Windows 11 without much explanation. By the end of last year, these features were no longer supported, although they still worked on systems that had them installed before. But now, that's coming to an end.
Microsoft has announced that the Chrome and Edge extensions for this shield will be the first to be discontinued. This extension is responsible for analyzing the websites that the user has visited and if any of them are considered potentially dangerous, it will be opened separately so that the PC is not at risk. However, this extension will not work with Manifest V3, the new version of the extension permissions and operation guidance tool in Chrome. This means that when V3 is deployed, the Microsoft Defender Application Guard extension will be completely disabled.
While the change won't impact home users too much since Microsoft Defender Application Guard is designed for organizations and businesses, Microsoft recommends users look for alternatives to stay protected from potentially dangerous websites.
