Mexico preserves indigenous cultural space

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has just signed a decree recognizing and preserving a number of geographical areas that possess many traditional cultural values of indigenous peoples in Mexico.

The cultural spaces covered by the decree include Isla del Rey in Nayarit state, Alacrán Island in Jalisco state, Cerro Gordo San Bernardino de Milpillas in Durango state, Wirikuta in San Luis Potosí state and Santa Catarina in Jalisco state. President Obrador also asked Mexicans to comply with the provisions of the decree, emphasizing the need to stop acts of encroachment on cultural spaces covered by the decree.

Although accounting for only about 6% of the world's total population, Mexico is home to dozens of indigenous peoples - owners of magnificent civilizations dating back 25,000 years, such as the Tarahumaras, Huichols, Mayans, Mazahuas, Otomi, Purépechas, Mexica, Nahuas, Yaquis, Mixtecs, Tlapanecos, Mixes, Triquis and Zapotecs.
