Mbappe shines as Real Madrid win La Liga opener

(Dan Tri) - Mbappe's only goal helped Real Madrid beat Osasuna 1-0 at Bernabeu in round 1 of La Liga early morning of August 20.

Welcoming weak opponent Osasuna at home stadium Bernabeu, Real Madrid fielded an attacking lineup with stars Guler, Brahim Diaz, Vinicius, Mbappe. Immediately after the opening whistle, coach Xabi Alonso's team pushed up the squad in search of a goal.

Throughout the first half, goalkeeper Courtois had almost no chance to touch the ball as Osasuna only focused on defense. The visitors' solid and focused play left Real Madrid with very few chances to score.

Real Madrid's attack played quite disjointedly and they accepted a 0-0 draw after the first 45 minutes. The highlight of the match came at the beginning of the second half, Mbappe accelerated, forcing Juan Cruz to commit a foul in the penalty area and Real Madrid was awarded a penalty.

On the 11m mark, Mbappe calmly defeated goalkeeper Herrera, opening the score 1-0 for Real Madrid in the 51st minute. Osasuna continued to play defensively in the following minutes to limit the loss and prevent Real Madrid from having many opportunities to approach the goal.

Osasuna's play improved towards the end of the match, when Bretones and Budimir also threatened Real Madrid's goal many times. However, goalkeeper Courtois played solidly and did not make any mistakes.

The match ended in controversy when Osasuna's Bretones received a straight red card in stoppage time for pulling Gonzalo Garcia's shirt. This was a rather harsh card for the away team player.

Real Madrid secured a 1-0 aggregate win at the Bernabeu and started the 2025-26 La Liga campaign with three points. However, they still have a lot to improve on to compete with Barcelona and Atletico for the title this season.
