Reasons why Taekwondo and Judo athletes are not nominated to receive the Third Class Labor Medal

After the 32nd SEA Games, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training sent a list of proposals to receive the Third Class Labor Medal for athletes and coaches with outstanding achievements. Among them are two Taekwondo martial artists, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hy and Hua Van Huy.

However, the Emulation Board of the Ministry of Home Affairs rejected the names of the two athletes because they did not meet the criteria according to Clause e, Section 1, Article 8, in the Circular on commendation standards and commendation proposals of the Ministry of Culture - Sports - Tourism dated March 30, 2015.

Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Head of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation, said: “ Circulars and decrees are very difficult to change, they must be replaced periodically. Meanwhile, the competition regulations of the tournaments are constantly changing. Therefore, the Competition Committee only works according to the letter of the law .”

Specifically, clause e, item 1, article 8 states: " Winning a gold medal at 3 consecutive SEA Games in a competition with one competition content ".

Minh Hy and Van Huy have won three consecutive SEA Games gold medals in the team creative freestyle event. However, at the 32nd SEA Games, these two athletes competed in the men's individual creative freestyle event and won bronze and silver medals respectively. This is the reason why the Competition Committee rejected the proposal to reward the two athletes.

“ This circular has been in place since 2015. The people from the General Department of Emulation still send the list of proposed athletes to the higher authorities, but the approval is still based on the wording of the regulations. The Emulation Board also follows the Circular. In previous SEA Games, many athletes also encountered similar problems. This is quite inappropriate, I think the circular needs to be changed. But the circular cannot be changed immediately, ” Mr. Dang Ha Viet added.

Besides the two Taekwondo athletes, two Judo athletes Le Anh Tai and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy encountered similar situations.

Previously, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training submitted a proposal to award the Labor Medal to 37 individuals and 196 individuals and groups received certificates of merit from the Prime Minister after their contributions at the 32nd SEA Games.
