According to Medical News Today , researchers in the US have discovered a fruit that is very beneficial for postmenopausal women.

Positive effects of mango on postmenopausal women

“Postmenopausal women are one of the least studied groups in the United States, despite this being a significant hormonal shift that affects nearly half of the population,” says Robert M. Hackman, PhD, a research nutritionist in the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis.

According to Dr. Hackman, when estrogen declines, women face significant changes in cardiovascular and metabolic health such as increased blood pressure and cholesterol.

Hackman is the lead author of a new study recently published in the Journal of the American Nutrition Association , which found that eating two servings of mango a day may support postmenopausal heart health by reducing blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol levels.

Additionally, researchers found that mangoes caused less of a spike in blood sugar.

At the same time, blood sugar levels returned to normal a few hours after eating, compared to when eating regular white bread.

"We chose mango because it is a nutrient-dense fruit that contains fiber, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds that are beneficial for heart health," said study co-author Dr. Roberta Holt, an associate researcher in the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis.

"Postmenopausal women face unique cardiovascular risks. We wanted to see if adding mango to their daily diet could make a difference," Holt added.

Mangoes help lower blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol levels

Scientists found that two hours after eating mango, participants had reduced systolic blood pressure and mean arterial blood pressure.

"Systolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure are important indicators of how hard the heart has to work to pump blood," Hackman explains.

Even small reductions in these markers can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke over time.

Scientists also found that participants reduced both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol - the "bad cholesterol."

Additionally, after eating mango and white bread, participants' blood sugar increased, but the increase after eating mango was significantly lower than after eating white bread. Blood insulin levels also peaked and fell rapidly after eating mango, but remained high two hours after eating white bread.

"This finding shows that not all carbohydrates affect the body in the same way. Although both mango and white bread contain carbohydrates, mango causes a smaller spike in blood sugar and a quicker return to normal," Holt said.

“Add mango to the list of versatile fruits and vegetables that are nutritious, delicious, and heart-healthy, and enjoy!” say the researchers.

For those looking to add mango to their diet, here are some simple ways:

Add to salads such as fruit salad, green vegetables.

Add to smoothie.

Puree to make salad dressings, marinades or frozen popsicles, gelato.

Serve with yogurt, cheese or toast.

Mix with mint or basil to serve with grilled or steamed fish.

Peel and eat with a small handful of nuts.

Chop and put in the juicer with vegetables to create a fresh natural sweetness.

Eat alone as a healthy part of a balanced breakfast, lunch or dinner.
