This was also the first time Lai Ly Huynh won an individual medal in the standard chess event at the world championship. Previously, this No. 1 Vietnamese player had won an individual gold medal in the rapid chess event.
In the men's team event, the Vietnamese team also lost the top spot to the Singapore team. Lai Ly Huynh ranked 2nd and Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang ranked 12th overall.
