Creating the future with semiconductors and artificial intelligence

Semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI) are two core areas for each country's economy. Not staying out of the trend, Da Nang has been building a strategy to become a new technology center.

From investment attraction policies to training high-quality human resources, the city has gradually affirmed its position, opening up a promising future for the high-tech industry.

Create high-tech infrastructure

On January 16, 2025, the city held the opening ceremony of Da Nang Software Park No. 2 and put into use the ICT1 building, which prioritizes partners, strategic investors, and innovative enterprises in the semiconductor and AI fields. Within just half a year of its operation, a series of strategic infrastructures were formed by the city and its partners at the concentrated information technology park.

On March 27,FPT Corporation held the opening ceremony of the Research and Development (R&D) Center for high technology and semiconductor chips, aiming to gather 500 technology experts working by 2025 and expand in the future.

100% of FPT products will be researched and developed here, with an average of 10 new products expected to be launched each year. The R&D Center plays a role in promoting innovation in Da Nang, creating an ecosystem connecting the startup community, gathering experts to research and develop technology products bearing the mark of "Make in Vietnam - Make in Da Nang".

Mr. Le Hoang Phuc, Director of the Danang Center for Research, Training and Development of Microchip Design and Artificial Intelligence (DSAC), said that DSAC is cooperating with GASA Company (under Sovico Group), Synopsys Company, and Tresemi organization (USA) to put into use a semiconductor and AI training lab.

At the same time, DSAC coordinated with the Danang Information Technology Infrastructure Development Center to support the Synopsys, GASA and Connexus alliances in designing and preparing equipment to arrange the lab to operate the Zebu Lab system, which is expected to be put into use from the end of 2025.

In particular, on July 28, the project of the Laboratory serving the production of advanced packaging technology for semiconductor microchips (Fab-Lab) with a total capital of 1,800 billion VND invested by VSAP LAB Joint Stock Company was started at Da Nang Software Park No. 2.

The project is divided into two main areas: the lab area focuses on research and development of new packaging technologies; the fab area conducts experimental production on real wafers, with advanced equipment meeting international standards; expected to be put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2026. After completion and operation, the project's design capacity is expected to reach 10 million products/year, serving the domestic and international markets.

Policy and human resource readiness

In recent times, Da Nang has focused on implementing resolutions of the City People's Council to concretize specific policies for science and technology development, innovation and digital transformation according to Resolution No. 136/2024/QH15 of the National Assembly on the organization of urban government and piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Da Nang city.

As a result, Da Nang's semiconductor ecosystem has grown from 8 initial design companies to 25 enterprises, attracting many large domestic and international technology corporations; of which, FPT Corporation and Marvell Vietnam Technology Co., Ltd. are 2 enterprises approved by the City People's Council, recognized as strategic partners in the field of semiconductors and AI.

The City People's Committee has issued a project on Developing the field of semiconductors and artificial intelligence in Decision No. 257/QD-UBND, thereby determining the goal by 2030 to make Da Nang one of the top 3 centers in the country in designing microchips and applying artificial intelligence; forming a network of training high-quality human resources and an innovation ecosystem in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries. Of which, developing at least 5,000 high-quality human resources in the semiconductor field; forming at least 30 design enterprises, 2 packaging enterprises, and at least 5 startups in the semiconductor field.

Regarding human resources, there are 8 universities and colleges in the city enrolling 600 students in the semiconductor microchip major from 2024. It is expected that in the period of 2025 - 2030, training institutions will enroll about 1,000 students each year, contributing to achieving and exceeding the target of 5,000 semiconductor workers by 2030 according to Decision No. 257/QD-UBND of the City People's Committee.

As the leading unit in training semiconductor microchip human resources, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Hieu, Principal of the University of Technology (University of Danang) said that the Microelectronics - Microchip Design major is entering its second year of enrollment. Students are trained with a total of 151 credits, in the 2025 - 2026 school year, the school will enroll 60 students.

The program focuses on IC design, providing knowledge for the entire design process, including digital and analog IC design as well as physical design and enough time to do projects. In addition, the program also teaches some related knowledge such as IoT, AI.

Dr. Le Quang Dam, General Director of Marvell Vietnam Technology Co., Ltd., commented that Da Nang is moving very quickly on the journey of developing a semiconductor ecosystem. Marvell opened an office in Da Nang in 2024 and received enthusiastic support from the city government. This is an important factor that helps businesses feel secure in their long-term development. There are about 60 engineers here focusing on researching and implementing the most advanced projects, including projects related to photonic chips. Currently, Marvell is striving to build new development directions with 70% of products related to AI and semiconductor technology.
