On June 25, information from Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC) said that the pediatric surgery team led by specialist I Le Si Phong and doctor Nguyen Ngoc Mai, Department of General Surgery, successfully performed surgery to remove a giant ovarian tumor from a 13-year-old girl.

Sharing the medical history, the family of patient NHN said that recently, the child's belly had grown abnormally large, without pain, and he was still eating and drinking normally. However, because they were too worried, the family took the child to the doctor.

At Children's Hospital 2, through ultrasound and CT scan, doctors discovered a large tumor originating from the right ovary. Test results for AFP and Beta-HCG cancer markers showed that the tumor did not show signs of malignancy, and the patient was scheduled for emergency surgery.

The surgery lasted more than 90 minutes, the team removed the entire tumor measuring 30x40cm, weighing nearly 8kg. The tumor contained mucus and solid tissue, and was diagnosed as a mucinous cystadenoma through pathology.

According to Dr. Le Si Phong, this is a benign tumor but can grow very large if not intervened promptly. The tumor often does not cause obvious symptoms, allowing the child to continue normal activities until it compresses internal organs, causing abdominal distension or dangerous complications such as torsion or rupture of the tumor.

After surgery, baby N. recovered quickly, ate normally after only 24 hours and was discharged after 3 days of monitoring. The baby's health is currently stable, with no complications recorded.

From this case, the doctor recommends that parents should not be subjective to unusual signs in children, no matter how small. An abnormally large abdomen, even without pain, can be a sign of a serious illness. At this time, parents need to take their children to the doctor early for ultrasound, screening and timely treatment, to avoid missing dangerous diseases such as ovarian tumors.
