On August 7, Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy, Head of the General Surgery Department, People's Hospital 115, said that this unit had just successfully performed emergency surgery on a case of a ruptured ovarian teratoma.

Previously, on July 20, Ms. NTKC (47 years old, residing in Tay Ninh province) was hospitalized with severe abdominal pain, abdominal distension, mild fever and general fatigue. Clinical examination and imaging results showed that the woman had a ruptured right ovarian teratoma, accompanied by peritonitis. This is a serious complication that can lead to sepsis if not treated promptly.

She was immediately scheduled for emergency surgery. In the operating room, doctors discovered that the patient’s abdomen contained a lot of pus mixed with hair and teeth due to a ruptured right ovarian tumor, measuring about 15cm. At the same time, another tumor in the left ovary measuring 7cm was also discovered.

Doctors removed the entire right ovary and the ruptured tumor, while also removing the left tumor and preserving the left ovary. After the surgery, which lasted more than 2 hours, the patient was closely monitored in the General Surgery Department and recovered well. She was discharged after 5 days in stable condition.

According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy, ovarian teratoma is a type of germ cell tumor, commonly found in women of reproductive age, and can even be found in younger people.

"Most ovarian teratoma are benign, but inside there are many tissues such as hair, skin, teeth... If the tumor grows large or ruptures, it can cause dangerous complications such as torsion, bleeding, infection or peritonitis, as in the recent case," Dr. Huy noted.

Teratomas often develop silently, without obvious symptoms in the early stages. Many cases are only discovered by chance during routine ultrasound scans, or when hospitalized for abdominal pain or menstrual disorders.

With large or ruptured tumors, the situation becomes critical quickly. At that time, treatment must take place urgently.

Dr. Huy emphasized that regular gynecological examination at least once a year is very important, even if there are no abnormal symptoms. Women aged 30 and over, or with a history of ovarian cysts or gynecological diseases, need to be examined more frequently.

In case of dull or severe lower abdominal pain, menstrual disorders, abdominal heaviness, bloating, unexplained fatigue, women need to go to the hospital early for timely detection and treatment.
