Green startups, or green entrepreneurship, play an important role in promoting sustainable growth by developing environmentally friendly products and services. These businesses not only create economic value but also minimize negative impacts on the environment, contributing to the sustainable development of society and the economy.
To implement the transition to a sustainable green economy, recently, the Government has issued many supporting policies such as the Green Growth Strategy, Renewable Energy Planning, energy saving programs and sustainable production and consumption.
In particular, most recently, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024 on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, continuing to identify science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as the main driving force for national modernization. The Resolution emphasizes the creation of favorable conditions for start-ups, especially in the field of green technology and innovation, and commits to providing strong support through preferential policies, venture capital and risk-taking in scientific research.
However, start-ups in the fields of energy efficiency, resource saving, new energy development, renewable energy, and waste recycling still face many barriers in accessing capital mobilization, high investment risks, ineffective support policies, and limited market awareness and behavior.
Many policies to support green startups
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam Giang, Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in recent times, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has implemented many policies to support start-up businesses in the field of green growth. Specifically, in the energy sector, especially renewable energy, the Ministry is prioritizing the development of sources such as solar power, wind power, biomass as well as new energy sources such as biofuels, hydrogen, ammonia, etc.
Accordingly, start-ups can focus on potential directions such as: Energy storage technology, fuel cells, optimizing the performance of renewable power systems or providing smart energy management solutions. However, according to the Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion, the specificity of this field is that it requires large investment capital right from the beginning, especially in technical infrastructure, this is still a big challenge that businesses need support mechanisms to overcome.
In the e-commerce sector, businesses can develop sustainable product connectivity platforms, apply paperless payment solutions, promote green marketing activities, connect with consumer markets towards sustainable lifestyles, or build business models based on circular economy principles.
These initiatives will continue to be supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade through the implementation of the National E-commerce Development Master Plan approved by the Prime Minister since 2020.
In the field of logistics and trade, businesses can focus on building green supply chains, promoting the export of environmentally friendly products, optimizing transportation operations and reducing emissions. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is currently implementing the Action Plan to improve competitiveness and develop Vietnam's logistics services to support these solutions in practice.
In the industrial manufacturing and processing sector, startups can aim for low-emission production technologies, use recycled materials, or develop circular production models in the manufacturing and processing industries. These solutions are being promoted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade through the National Action Program on Sustainable Production and Consumption for the 2021-2030 period.
In addition to existing programs, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will also continue to coordinate with relevant ministries and branches to develop specific incentive policies for green startups, including tax and financial support packages, as well as simplifying administrative procedures to facilitate market access and expansion of operations.
