When jars, pots, gongs, and bells "tell stories" with magical sounds

(PLVN) - A special sound journey, where pottery turntables become storytellers and familiar musical instruments in life such as jars, pots, gongs, bells... have the opportunity to tell their own stories with unique and magical melodies.

The new show “Gom Show - Sounds from pottery” - where the sounds of Vietnamese pottery are awakened and resonate in the flow of contemporary art will take place on the evening of June 28-29, 2025 at Hanoi Theater.

It is not only a sound journey using symbolic techniques to tell the story of the land and people through non-verbal language, but also connects a heritage that is both tangible and deep in the mind - ceramic culture.

“GOm Show” by the Dan Do group takes the audience into a world rich in feelings - where each layer of sound awakens the imagination, evokes cultural memories, and leads the listener through “morning - festival - afternoon - return”, in a diverse but unified sound-cultural space in the Vietnamese soul. Artist Dinh Anh Tuan affirmed that the programs in GOm Show such as “Quay ve”, “Thoi do”, “Xuoi dong”, “Tim Hani”, “Gom”... are the unique voices of indigenous ethnic communities such as M'nong, Tay, Lo Lo, Nung Din, E De, Ha Nhi...

The artists use special musical instruments that the group of authors researched and created themselves, such as jar drums (using ceramic jars and inner tubes to create super low sounds like a giant bass); lang drums (shaped like rice cakes, with warm, low sounds like echoes from underground); ceramic gongs and ceramic bells (creating sounds from baked clay with unique timbre structures, each one is a separate sound entity); rotating ceramics (resonating by rotating the mouth of the ceramic, creating a soft reverberating effect); clay pot lute (gentle sounds reverberating from clay pots)...

According to Mr. Do Tuan Anh - Chairman of Thien Thanh Company - producer of "GOm show", the program aims to open up a world of sound that leads listeners to emotional realms, carrying wordless stories of Vietnamese history and culture. The project's implementers believe that indigenous music is not only a heritage but also a way for us to understand beauty, our origins and ourselves. It is the path that leads each person, especially the young, to subtlety in perception and depth in understanding of national culture.

The Dan Do Group was founded in 2011 with 4 members: Dinh Anh Tuan, Nguyen Duc Minh, Nguyen Quang Su, Tran Kim Ngoc, with a consistent creative journey based on indigenous materials. With the philosophy of taking culture as the root and people as the energy, the group's projects originate from Vietnamese materials and spirit, creating works with a strong indigenous character and contemporary spirit.

Over 12 years of creating and performing on the basis of indigenous materials with a contemporary spirit, with many tours in Europe, but this is the first time the program has the participation of young artists such as: Duong Thi Men, Le Duy, Nguyen Tra Huong, Nguyen Tra Giang, Dam Van Huy... The project is a continuation between two generations of artists with many special musical instruments researched and manufactured by the group such as: Jar Drum, Lang Drum, Rotating Pottery, Nieu Dan, Chieng Sanh and Bell Sanh...
