Blumenau is located in the middle of the Vale do Itajaí, nicknamed the “Valley of Europe”. The climate and terrain here are quite similar to those of Northern Italy. Blumenau welcomes more than 800,000 visitors each year, of which more than 700,000 come to attend Oktoberfest. The first Oktoberfest in Blumenau was held in 1984 as a way to lift the spirits of the locals after a historic flood devastated the city.

Oktoberfest Blumenau is held in Parque Vila Germânica (“German Village”), a series of streets built to resemble an old German town. During the festival (the last three weeks of October), parties are held continuously. Visitors pay between R$11 and R$60 (50% discount for children, teachers and people with disabilities) to join the party, enjoy traditional German food and craft beer. What’s more, entry is free on the first and last days of the festival.

Oktoberfest Blumenau is not all about parties. Several other events are held within the framework of the festival. There are traditional German entertainment events such as Tanzgruppen (traditional team dancing), Schützenvereine (shooting competition)... and the most exciting is the beer drinking competition. Each participant will receive a 91.4cm long beer mug containing 1.4 liters of beer. The man and woman who drink the beer mug fastest are the winners.

Every evening during Oktoberfest, Blumenau transforms into a giant stage. Artists from German-speaking countries perform on the streets of Blumenau, alongside stalls selling crafts and snacks set up by locals. During the final week of the festival, there is also a Miss Oktoberfest contest. The winner is crowned “Oktoberfest Queen,” while the two runners-up are named “Oktoberfest Princesses.” All three are then carried on a float in the parade on the morning of the last day of the festival.
