In early August 2023, cracks appeared on the Ho Chi Minh road section Km1900+350 - Km1900+650 (left side of the route) through Bac Gia Nghia ward. Just a few days later, the subsidence quickly spread, with many spots 5 - 10 m deep.

Faced with the above situation, the government has organized measures to ensure traffic safety, evacuate people from areas at risk of subsidence and limit traffic activities. The Provincial People's Committee has decided to declare a natural disaster emergency in this area, and at the same time requested the authorities to clarify the cause.

Nearly a year after the subsidence, the authorities announced the cause of the incident. In particular, the professional agency determined that the subsidence was an accident, not due to design or construction errors. The subsidence of the road was due to many factors, of which prolonged heavy rain was the direct and decisive cause. The rainfall recorded in the subsidence area was a record high in the previous 40 years. In July 2023 alone, it increased by 1.2 to 2 times compared to the average of many previous years. Prolonged heavy rain caused the ground on the negative slope to become waterlogged, leading to instability and serious landslides.

To completely fix the subsidence area, local authorities have proposed two long-term stabilization solutions: restoring the original state and renovating the route. Of these, the option of restoring the road to its original state before the subsidence has been chosen.

The collapsed road is part of the BOT (build-operate-transfer) road investment project. Therefore, the Provincial People's Committee assigned BOT and BT Duc Long Dak Nong Joint Stock Company to be the investor and responsible for the repair.

According to the Department of Construction, to fix the problem, the subsidence area will be cleared of the underlying soil and a retaining wall system will be built. The retaining wall will be placed on a reinforced concrete bored pile foundation. After that, the entire traffic safety system, technical infrastructure, trees, etc. will be restored to their original state.

In the project feasibility study report, the BOT side proposed an investment of VND88 billion to fix the problem. However, the Department of Construction only assessed the investment at over VND71 billion. The reason for the decrease is that during the assessment process, there were adjustments, calculations of the design volume of some items to suit the reality and updated unit prices of materials, components, etc.

At the end of June 2025, the Provincial People's Committee approved the Project to repair and overcome incidents on the Ho Chi Minh Road section from Km1900+350 to Km1900+650. Duc Long Dak Nong BOT and BT Joint Stock Company will restore and solidify more than 500 m of road in the area where the subsidence incident occurred.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quy - Deputy Director of Duc Long Dak Nong BOT and BT Joint Stock Company, the company is currently carrying out procedures to select a consultant to survey, examine and appraise the construction drawing design. The investor plans to select a contractor before December 15, 2025 and organize construction, completing the project before September 15, 2026.

Duc Long Dak Nong BOT and BT Joint Stock Company affirmed that it will focus on implementing the project in accordance with the approved procedures. The subsidence repair is aimed at ensuring safe and smooth traffic on Ho Chi Minh Road and contributing to stabilizing the lives of people in the area where the incident occurred.
