This situation is happening more and more frequently, seriously affecting people's lives and activities. Local authorities are trying to find solutions to overcome this.
In September 2024, storm No. 3 (Yagi) caused heavy rain in the area. Huge floods from Bac Kan poured down the Cau River into Thai Nguyen city. The water rose quickly, flooding a large area, leaving many families unable to react. Thousands of cars and many valuable properties were submerged in water, causing huge damage to people's property.
This is a historic flood, unavoidable, beyond the predictions of many people. Living next to the Xuong Rong Lake, Phan Dinh Phung Ward, Mr. Nguyen Van Ba shared: Every time there is a prolonged heavy rain, water from many places flows into the Xuong Rong Lake area, the neighboring streets. The water rises quickly, some families only have time to get their cars out before the water floods the basement, the Xuong Rong Lake is flooded with water, flooding the surrounding walking paths.
Not only heavy rains, but also prolonged rains have caused many areas in the city to be flooded. In some places, water cannot drain into the sewers, but instead flows back from the sewers onto the road surface. City leaders explained: Thai Nguyen is an urban area on the banks of the Cau River that has been formed and developed for more than 60 years. Due to historical and planning factors, the drainage infrastructure system was built decades ago, but is now outdated and degraded. Many streets have sewers that are too small to cope with prolonged heavy rains. In addition, people also believe that the cause comes from the rapid urbanization rate.
Some regulating lakes have been narrowed, the natural water seepage area is decreasing due to concreting. To overcome flooding immediately, every time there is heavy rain, local authorities mobilize urban environmental workers, police, and civil defense to keep watch, open manhole covers to drain water faster, guard deep flooded areas to ensure people's safety; support people whose houses are flooded to move their belongings to safety.
People on many streets and low-lying areas proactively build thresholds in front of their houses and gates so that when it rains heavily, they can install wooden panels to prevent water from flooding into their houses; many households on both sides of Minh Cau Street prepare racks and tools so that when water floods their houses, they can raise their furniture and belongings higher.
In order to carry out the assigned tasks, in recent times, Thai Nguyen Urban Infrastructure Development and Drainage One Member Co., Ltd. has actively mobilized vehicles, equipment and human resources to dredge the sewer, ditch and canal system to speed up drainage, gradually overcoming local flooding. After the severe flood in 2024, the city continued to review the current situation, organize seminars, invite experts and scientists on irrigation and flood prevention to find the causes and propose solutions, including specific construction solutions.
The provincial leaders have also proposed a policy to focus on preventing urban flooding. The Standing Committee and the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee have identified: Urban beautification and preventing flooding as one of the city's key tasks in the 2025-2030 term and will continue to be strongly implemented after the two-level government organization is completed.
