Building a school education plan is no longer just about distributing the prescribed program, but must become a tool for managing educational quality, clearly demonstrating the identity, development orientation and autonomy of each institution.
Focus on teaching 2 sessions/day
The Secondary and High School of Pedagogy (University of Pedagogy 2) has implemented the development of the school education program from an early age, with a team of experts including highly qualified lecturers from University of Pedagogy 2. The school has regularly communicated the development of the school education program associated with each subject so that parents and students can clearly understand before the new school year begins.
Regarding the highlight of teaching 2 sessions/day, Dr. Pham Van Gieng - Vice Principal of the school said, this is not simply increasing the number of periods, but more importantly, reorganizing the space and study time, so that students can access both academics, experiences, personal activities and clubs.
The school strengthens core subjects and career orientation; adjusts the curriculum framework, adds lessons in Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Information Technology, Natural Sciences , etc. to both meet knowledge standards and create conditions for students to practice application skills and prepare for exams.
The school's highlight this year is integrating IT with international standards (such as IC3, MOS), bringing AI concepts and applications into the curriculum from middle school to high school. Along with that, focusing on STEM education, experiential activities and social-emotional education.
The educational plan is not only limited to the classroom, but also extends to debate clubs, STEM, arts, sports , extracurricular programs, and community projects. This helps students develop comprehensively in knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The development of the new school year educational plan also demonstrates the role of connecting the school - family - community through talk shows, festivals, and thematic exchanges.
Effectively and properly implementing the organization of teaching 2 sessions/day is an important requirement that Vinh Long High School (Phuoc Hau, Vinh Long) set out when developing the school's educational plan. According to Principal Vo Tan Phat, the school reviewed the conditions of facilities and teaching staff to arrange classrooms; arrange to ensure a study schedule of at least 5 days/week, maximum 11 sessions/week, each day no more than 7 periods/class.
The content of the first and second sessions is also specifically determined; the arrangement of the first and second sessions is flexible, suitable to the school's conditions, not causing pressure on students. The plan also focuses on diversifying the forms of teaching and learning; balancing the budget to ensure funding for implementing two sessions per day; promoting socialization, encouraging and creating conditions for organizations and individuals to contribute and invest resources for education according to the provisions of law.
“There are 4 new points and highlights in implementing the school year’s tasks, especially implementing 2 sessions/day of teaching at Vinh Long High School. Firstly, determining the core and consistent goal of improving the quality of comprehensive education, in line with the 2018 General Education Program and the direction of innovation for the whole sector.
Second, clearly define session 1 and session 2 in the plan, ensuring scientific, flexible, and comprehensive development of students; do not force the morning to be session 1 and the afternoon to be session 2. Third, do not overload students, teachers, and parents. Fourth, prioritize budget allocation to organize 2 sessions/day, effectively implement the policy of socializing education to ensure the principles of voluntariness, publicity, transparency, and compliance with the law", Mr. Vo Tan Phat shared.

Student-centered
Sharing his experience in building a school education plan to meet new requirements, especially teaching 2 sessions/day, Dr. Pham Van Gieng said: The school's view is that teaching 2 sessions/day not only helps students consolidate and improve their academic knowledge but also trains them in life skills, digital skills and foreign languages according to international standards.
The afternoon becomes an experiential space with clubs, interdisciplinary activities and projects linked to practice to develop social skills, creative thinking, and personalize learning activities. From there, students learn more comprehensively, are more proactive, and are ready for international integration.
Specifically, Dr. Pham Van Gieng emphasized the need to increase the number of hours in the right place, right demand, right capacity target, in line with the school's orientation. The school prioritizes subjects that serve the purpose of enhanced learning linked to career orientation (Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Natural Science/Social Science group), but avoids the situation of "cramming hours". Each increased period must be linked to capacity output (problem solving, academic communication, data thinking) and assessment evidence (practice, project, learning portfolio).
Along with that, increase the number of hours to expand the experience space and clubs. Afternoon classes should not be turned into “extra classes in school”, but should be an opportunity for students to develop their comprehensive abilities.
At the same time, mobilizing open resources to operate 2 sessions/day sustainably is an important solution to both improve quality and ensure feasibility in practical conditions. Building a suitable timetable, avoiding overloading students during the planning process; focusing on the specific competencies of each subject associated with STEM, AI, and international integration orientation.
Also sharing her experience in building the school's educational plan, Ms. Dam Thi Mai - Head of Social Sciences, Thuan Hoa High School (Hue City) mentioned the key points for the school to successfully implement teaching 2 sessions/day as follows:
Student-centered: Differentiate the program according to each block, meeting both common goals and individual needs (allowing students to register according to their desired combination, ability and strengths); regularly survey opinions and adjust plans to suit reality.
Combining study - practice - foreign language: In the morning, learn knowledge; in the afternoon, supplement, practice, join clubs and improve foreign languages (English, Korean, Chinese). This method helps students develop comprehensively and be ready for integration.
Consensus from parents: The school is transparent, public about the content, goals, and budget, and receives the support and shared responsibility of parents. The dedication of teachers and the efforts of students are also decisive factors in the practical and effective implementation of the second session program.
In addition to the core teaching staff playing a leading role, the school mobilizes student clubs (from the Hanoi National University of Education 2 Youth Union) to participate in supporting enhanced learning hours, elective lessons, and experiential activities.
At the same time, the participation of experts in each specific field will bring practical breath, helping students have more career perspectives, connecting knowledge with life. Mobilizing open resources demonstrates the connection between schools, universities and society, helping the 2-session/day model not be closed but have a community character. This is the sustainable direction for general education to adapt to the requirements of innovation and integration - Dr. Pham Van Gieng
