The Telegraph newspaper on November 13 quoted Mr. Tashakori as saying that the tunnel would initially connect two metro stations and have direct access to a hospital in the Iranian capital.

“This tunnel connects different parts of the city as part of a larger strategy,” Tashakori told journalists in Tehran.

However, the announcement did not provide much information about the purpose or specific details about the defensive features the tunnel might provide.

The project was launched after Israel carried out airstrikes on military centers near Tehran and several other Iranian cities in October, causing panic among the Iranian people.

People demand timely information about airstrikes, especially when Tehran has no warning system or safe shelters.

Previously, the West said Iran kept its airspace open when it fired dozens of missiles at US forces in Iraq in 2020.

This led to an aviation tragedy when Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 was shot down while taking off from Tehran airport, killing all 176 people on board on January 8, 2020.

Iran also allowed civilian flights to operate normally while firing a series of missiles towards Israeli territory in April and October this year.

According to observers, the tunnel inside the subway will likely be used as a shelter for civilians in case Israel continues to launch airstrikes on the Iranian capital in the near future.

Iranian media reported that the Officers' Academy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will hold a seminar on defense tunnels on November 20.
