Instagram changes how it displays controversial images

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/01/2025

Instagram, the social media platform owned by Meta, has just officially changed the display format on user profiles. For the first time in 15 years of its launch, the platform will abandon the traditional square arrangement (1:1) and switch to a vertical rectangular display (4:5).

According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, the decision reflects a shift in how people create content. With the popularity of smartphones and vertically-oriented cameras, most photos and videos are now produced in vertical format. Displaying this content in a square frame is often awkward and doesn’t take full advantage of screen space.

Young users are discussing Instagram's new update quite enthusiastically.

While this change seems reasonable, it has received mixed reactions from the user community. Due to the square format, users have long tended to arrange small images into one large image. However, when the update took place, the images were displayed incorrectly for the user’s intention, causing both funny and sad situations.

Instagram believes that innovation is necessary to meet evolving tastes and content consumption behaviors. The focus on vertical video, especially in Reels, has proven to be a strong attraction for younger users - an important customer group for the Instagram platform in particular and the entire Meta ecosystem in general.

In addition to the profile display changes, Instagram also announced a new feature for its Reels feature, which will allow users to see a list of videos that their friends have liked. This feature is expected to strengthen the connection between users and encourage them to interact with more content on the platform.

These changes are meant to strengthen Instagram's position in competition with short-form video platforms like TikTok and emphasize the importance of vertical video, but whether this change will satisfy all users remains to be seen.
