(HTV) - Hanoi organized an international conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of national reunification, clarifying the peace- building role of Vietnamese diplomacy.

On April 24, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized an international scientific conference with the theme “50 years of national reunification: The role of diplomacy in peacemaking in history and present”, on the occasion of the half-century anniversary of the country’s complete reunification. President Luong Cuong attended and delivered a profound speech at the event.

In his opening speech, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized that the historic victory of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign exactly 50 years ago not only had the meaning of completely liberating the South and unifying the country, but also opened a new era - the era of "independence, unity, peace and development" for the Vietnamese people. According to him, this was the result of patriotism, the spirit of great national unity, the burning aspiration of the Vietnamese people and peace-loving friends around the world. In that journey, diplomacy played a particularly important role.

The Deputy Prime Minister also affirmed that, from valuable lessons learned in the struggle for independence, Vietnam today proactively and actively participates in building and protecting a fair and equal international order based on international law, making increasingly practical contributions to global security and peace.

Speaking at the conference, President Luong Cuong affirmed that the historical significance and lessons from the victory on April 30, 1975 still hold true in the current context. “Looking back at the history of the struggle for national liberation, we are increasingly aware of the very important role of diplomacy,” the President emphasized.

He also highlighted some major lessons in Vietnam's diplomatic activities, including: creatively applying Ho Chi Minh's ideology and diplomatic style; upholding the spirit of independence, self-reliance and self-reliance; combining national strength with the strength of the times; being flexible in strategy, steadfast in strategic goals; attaching importance to close coordination between foreign affairs with national defense, security, economy and other key areas.

The President particularly emphasized that the victory of April 30, 1975 and the strong revival of Vietnam are vivid proof of the aspiration for peace, of the ability to close the past and look towards the future - not only for Vietnam but also a model for the international community.

Expressing deep gratitude, the President affirmed that the Party, State and People of Vietnam always appreciate the support and companionship of friends and progressive people around the world - including the American people - who have stood side by side with Vietnam in the struggle for peace, justice and truth: "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom".

Also at the conference, Lady Borton – an American writer and historical witness – shared in Vietnamese: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs not only organized negotiations in Paris, but also carried out people’s diplomacy – mobilizing European, African, Latin American countries, and even the American people. It is not just ambassadorial diplomacy, but also people’s diplomacy – only when there are many demonstrations will governments of other countries begin to support Vietnam. That is very broad diplomacy.”

The workshop also brought together many experts, scientists, and historical witnesses from within and outside the country to discuss and share lessons learned from the historic spring victory of April 30, 1975 to the current and future role of Vietnamese diplomacy in maintaining peace, promoting development, and enhancing the country's position in the international arena.
