Isak hasn't played an official game since May. |
The Swedish striker has repeatedly told Newcastle’s board that he wants to leave the club to join Liverpool. Previously, the Reds’ £110 million offer was rejected. The summer transfer window will officially close at 7pm on September 1.
Newcastle have no intention of selling Isak, and manager Eddie Howe is hopeful of getting him back into the squad. However, the Swede has been training on his own all summer and is currently lacking match fitness.
Isak has not played a competitive game since May, when he missed the entire pre-season with Newcastle due to transfer tensions. However, Tomasson has included Isak in his 23-man squad for the games against Slovenia (5 September) and Kosovo (8 September). In a press conference on 28 August, he warned Liverpool that if Isak moves to Anfield, he will need time to regain his form.
The Swedish coach affirmed: "Can he play 90 minutes? Of course not. Absolutely not."
Tomasson added that Isak is a professional player, has a strong personality and always works hard. After talking to Isak many times, the Swedish coach realized that Isak is still mentally strong.
When discussing the transfer story, Tomasson commented: “It is difficult to have a clear opinion. We do not know exactly what happened at the club. We need to be careful, avoid hasty conclusions when we do not have enough information. Alex is smart enough, even smarter than me I think.”
