Victory over Burnley covered up the cracks, but Amorim remain under huge pressure. |
The pressure on Ruben Amorim is increasing, but many English football experts believe that the "Red Devils"'s difficulties do not only stem from the Portuguese coach. Commenting on the Match of the Day program, former England international Danny Murphy said that Manchester United's problems do not only lie with Amorim.
Murphy pointed out a familiar problem: “Manchester United’s defensive structure is not consistent. We saw Burnley exploiting the spaces, especially in the second half, and that’s not something Amorim can fix immediately.”
Murphy highlighted the lack of understanding between Manchester United's defenders that dates back to Erik ten Hag. Steph Houghton, the former England women's international, agreed.
“It’s not all down to Amorim,” she said. “Manchester United’s recruitment strategy has been inconsistent. They bought players like Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans, who were temporary solutions, then this summer spent £200m on a striker.”
Murphy assessed that the MU board only bought strikers this summer, but refused to add any more central defenders or midfielders, causing the "Red Devils" squad to become unbalanced: "Amorim is just a victim at Manchester United. Amorim's 3-4-3 system needs time, but the players' lack of flexibility and the board's indecision are the bigger problems."
