Ten Hag receives huge compensation

After just two Bundesliga games in the 2025/26 season, Erik ten Hag had to say goodbye to Bayer Leverkusen - and this quick end helped him pocket a huge compensation.

Erik ten Hag leaves Leverkusen, receives compensation of more than 8 million pounds.

Appointed in May to succeed Xabi Alonso, Ten Hag signed a two-year contract worth €5.5m (£4.7m) a season, making him the second highest-paid coach in the Bundesliga. However, after a poor start to the season, the 55-year-old was sacked.

Leverkusen issued a brief statement on the afternoon of September 1, confirming that Ten Hag was no longer in charge and that an interim coaching staff would take over the team. The decision came shortly after a match in which they let slip a two-goal lead against Werder Bremen, a match that saw Ten Hag publicly criticise his players for “lack of fitness and responsibility”.

“The players are not ready yet. They have to show that they want to fight together,” Ten Hag asserted. But that appeal was not enough to save his seat.

The deal signed in May will see Ten Hag – who left the club after less than three months – receive a compensation package in excess of £8m, a figure that will ease the pain of early unemployment but also highlight the cost of Leverkusen’s brief experiment with the former Ajax and Manchester United boss.

From a position of great expectation, Ten Hag has now become one of the coaches who received the biggest "farewell gift" after being fired at the beginning of the European season.

Last year, Erik ten Hag received around £10.4m in compensation from Man United after being sacked, according to British media. Some sources initially estimated the figure could be as high as £15m.
