Sesko has yet to score for MU. |
Benjamin Sesko has only been at Manchester United for less than a month, but two missed headers against Burnley were enough to put the pressure on the 22-year-old striker. At £74m, he has little time to learn the ropes - Old Trafford is all about goals, and straight away.
Header goes where?
The moment Bryan Mbeumo sent the ball precisely into the penalty area, Sesko jumped higher than everyone else. The crowd held their breath waiting for the net to shake. But the ball flew over the top of the goal. A few minutes later, Diogo Dalot also placed the ball right on the Slovenian rookie's forehead. This time it was even easier, but the shot flew wide of the post, unbelievably harmless.
Two consecutive chances were squandered in the context of Man Utd's thirst for goals. Sesko not only missed the chance to make his mark, but also brought his own expectations down to an alarming level.
Old Trafford has never been an easy place for big signings. Fans still remember Wayne Rooney scoring a hat-trick on his debut, Ruud Van Nistelrooy scoring on his first day, Robin Van Persie opening his account on the familiar stage. Compared to those "debuts", Sesko's lackluster performance only deepened the contrast.
74 million pounds is not bought to regret. A striker at Man Utd cannot just jump high, choose a position or "almost score". He must score, because that is the standard that is engraved in the club's history.
Sesko had chances, but could not score. |
Last season, Ruben Amorim concluded that Rasmus Hojlund was not sharp enough to lead the attack. As a result, the Danish striker left for Napoli, making way for Sesko as an “upgrade”. But within a few weeks, the old image was back: a striker who rushed into a slow-moving position, turned around awkwardly, and lost the ball in simple situations.
From Grimsby in the Carabao Cup to Burnley in the Premier League, Sesko has not shown himself to be different. In fact, his clumsy appearance is reminiscent of Wout Weghorst - the name once considered a "short-term mistake" at Old Trafford.
Amorim was quick to defend his player: Sesko was not in top physical shape, had not played a full 90 minutes in pre-season, and was even struggling with cramps. “We have to protect him,” the Portuguese coach stressed.
The fitness issues are understandable, but United cannot wait forever. In contrast to Sesko, Mbeumo - another new signing - has settled in immediately, creating chances and causing constant danger. This contrast only deepens the frustration that Sesko brings.
The problem of the number 9 shirt
Old Trafford needs a centre-forward who can carry the load. From Denis Law to Van Nistelrooy to Van Persie, the No. 9 shirt has always been synonymous with a killer instinct. But in the post-Sir Alex era, that position has become a void that has not been filled for long. Sesko was chosen to end that cycle - but he has only sown more doubt.
Time waits for no Sesko. |
Time is not on Amorim’s side. A coach under pressure cannot rely on a “striker development project” that lasts for years. Sesko must score now, to free himself and save the coach.
Sesko is young and has great potential, but his £74m price tag takes away the right to make mistakes. He is no longer a “promising player” but a blockbuster signing, forced to become an instant solution. A header could change everything: restore the trust of the crowd, ease the pressure from the media, and take himself out of Hojlund’s shadow.
On the contrary, if the missed shots continue to repeat, Sesko risks becoming the name to lengthen the list of "expensive disappointments" of Man Utd - a sentence that Old Trafford has become all too familiar with after more than a decade of weariness.
Sesko still has a chance to change his fate, but the time available to him is running out. Man Utd need goals, need a real No. 9, need a new symbol to cling to. If Sesko does not respond soon, the £74 million shirt will become a burden that will crush his career right from the start.
