Implementing the conversion of crop structure, recently Van Son commune (Trieu Son) has converted hundreds of hectares of ineffective rice land to grow ornamental peach trees, bringing in income of hundreds of millions of VND/ha, many times higher than before.
Mr. Le Duc Toan in Van Son commune trims and shapes the peach garden.
While pruning and shaping peach trees, Mr. Le Duc Toan in village 2, Van Son commune - owner of a 0.7-hectare peach garden said: “Because I have been growing peach trees for 10 years in Xuan Du commune (Nhu Thanh), I have learned the secrets of growing peach trees that bring in very high income. Therefore, in 2019, I returned to my hometown and decided to convert 4 sao of my family's rice fields with low productivity due to difficulties in water resources during the spring-summer crop to grow peach trees. In addition to my family's 4 sao of rice fields, I also rented 15 sao of fields from households with adjacent fields. On this area, I renovated and planted precious peach varieties from different regions such as Quang Chinh double-flowered peach trees (Quang Xuong), Hanoi peach trees, Hai Phong peach trees, Moc Chau peach trees, etc. Of which, Quang Chinh double-flowered peach trees are the most beautiful with 400 trees out of a total of 600 peach trees. Although it has only been planted for 4 years, Thanks to the experience in planting and caring for ornamental peach trees, my family's peach garden has grown well, with many flowers and blooming right on Tet. Moreover, the technique of creating beautiful shapes and bonsai trees means that on average each tree costs several million VND. The money from selling hundreds of peach trees each year helps my family not only pay off the 100 million VND bank loan for investing in growing peach trees, but also save over 200 million VND each year."
In village 3 of the same commune, due to difficulties in irrigation water, 5 sao of rice land of Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa's family was converted to growing ornamental peach trees since 2017. Mr. Khoa said: These 5 sao of land previously grew rice with a yield of only 1.2 tons/year. With the purchase price of 7 million VND/ton from traders, after deducting investment costs, 5 sao of rice only gave a profit of 2 million VND/crop. However, since switching to growing ornamental peach trees, the family's 300 peach trees have been sold in parts with an average of nearly 100 trees per year, his family has a profit of more than 100 million VND per year. According to Mr. Khoa, not everyone can grow peach trees, but it depends entirely on the weather, requiring special care techniques.
“To have a beautiful peach garden that blooms on time for Tet, the peach tree must be taken care of very carefully, each branch must have the “peach eyes” evenly spaced and have seven nodes on a branch to be beautiful. Peach trees are a type of tree that is very sensitive to the weather, so it requires the peach grower to be careful and quite elaborate, understand the techniques and weather to calculate the leaf stripping schedule so that the flowers bloom on time. Taking care of peach trees is a job that requires meticulousness, effort and a real understanding of the characteristics of peach trees to be able to have a beautiful peach garden at the end of the year," Mr. Khoa shared.
It is known that Van Son peach is a beautiful peach variety that is very popular with players. This type of tree has been spontaneously planted by some households in their gardens since the 90s of the last century, both for decoration and for sale to people in neighboring communes during Tet. Realizing the economic value of peach growing, since 2010, Van Son commune authorities have mobilized people to renovate mixed gardens and plant peach trees. At the same time, they have coordinated with relevant units to transfer science and technology in planting and caring for peach trees; established peach growing associations in villages for households to share experiences and find outlets for their products. Thanks to that, peach trees have found a place and affirmed their income value. In order to develop sustainable production and increase income value per unit of cultivated area, the commune has planned ineffective rice growing areas and mobilized people to switch to growing ornamental peach trees. From 2017 to present, Van Son commune has had 110 hectares of ineffective rice land converted to growing ornamental peach trees with 400 households participating, concentrated in villages 1, 2, 3, 4.
Chairman of Van Son Commune People's Committee Le Ba Thanh said: After the conversion, the income value per hectare of peach trees will reach 500 - 600 million VND/ha/year, dozens of times higher than rice cultivation.
