Health insurance coverage for seniors
The work of protecting, caring for and promoting the role of the elderly has become a key task that all levels, sectors and localities pay attention to, contributing to building a humane, affectionate and sustainable society. Deputy Head of the City Elderly Association Thai Dinh Hoang said that up to now, 98% of the elderly from 60 years old have health insurance cards. This is an important basis for the city's elderly to conveniently access medical services, protecting their health effectively and comprehensively.
From 2023, the Association's representative board will coordinate with the Department of Health to implement a program to protect, care for and improve the health of the elderly until 2030. The goal of the program is to strengthen the capacity of the health system in caring for the health of the elderly, while adapting to the increasingly obvious trend of population aging. In 2024, the whole city will have more than 63,800 elderly people receiving periodic health check-ups at district and commune health centers and commune and ward health stations. In particular, 7 representative boards of the Association of the Elderly at district and commune levels will proactively mobilize the participation of public and non-public medical examination and treatment facilities in screening, consulting, and supporting the treatment of chronic diseases and common diseases in the elderly such as: eyes, musculoskeletal, lung, oral, stroke prevention, etc.
Some typical activities include: Hospital 199 ( Ministry of Public Security ) organized examinations and rehabilitation for 1,500 elderly people; Da Nang Traditional Medicine Hospital supported geriatric specialized treatment for nearly 500 people; Laza Da Nang International Clinic and An Phuc General Clinic organized general examinations and specialized dental and oral care for more than 3,000 elderly people.
Connect, support and grow
In addition to taking care of physical health, the City Elderly Association at all levels also pays special attention to the spiritual life and social security of the elderly, especially those in difficult circumstances. According to Mr. Thai Dinh Hoang, in 2023, the City Association mobilized and presented 9,015 gifts with a total value of more than 3.9 billion VND to the elderly and families with elderly people who are poor, near-poor, sick, or lonely. Along with that, cultural, artistic, and sports activities are organized regularly, creating a healthy playground, arousing optimism, and connecting the community. The City Association coordinates with the cultural and sports sector to organize many competitions, performances, and sports tournaments for the elderly. "These activities contribute to promoting the grassroots cultural movement. This is one of the important factors that help the elderly live happily, healthily, and happily," Mr. Hoang shared.
To date, the city has 165 health clubs, 34 art clubs, 56 health care and consulting clubs and 44 intergenerational self-help clubs that are operating effectively. One of the typical models is the intergenerational self-help club in Duong Son village, Hoa Chau commune (Hoa Vang district). Ms. Nguyen Thi Chuan, Club Chairwoman, said: “The club currently has 55 members, meeting regularly on the 19th of every month. In addition to the contents according to the instructions of the International Organization for Aging Assistance in Vietnam (HAI), we also organize regular health check-ups twice a year, cultural exchanges, sharing life experiences and self-care.”
In addition, the club established a volunteer group of 10 members, regularly visiting and encouraging the sick and lonely elderly. Currently, the unit is maintaining a fund of more than 150 million VND, of which 115 million VND is sponsored by HAI Organization and 15 million VND from the local budget, used to lend capital to members for production, small business, and improving their lives.
Vice President of the Elderly Association of Ngu Hanh Son District Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nhung said that every year, the District Association coordinates with the District Health Center and ward health stations to organize free medical examinations and provide medicine for thousands of elderly people. In 2024 alone, 6,675 people received free medical examinations and medicine. The Association coordinated with Saigon Eye Hospital to provide consultation, eye examinations and medicine for 200 people. In addition, the District Association mobilized more than 1,100 gifts with a total value of more than 390 million VND to support the elderly in difficult circumstances, contributing to improving their lives and encouraging the spirit of "old age, bright example". These efforts have spread the spirit of community responsibility and affirmed the core role of the elderly in building cultural life in residential areas.
