On July 4, People's Hospital 115 (HCMC) announced that it had received and treated two critically ill patients while participating in a running race.
Two patients were transferred from the 115 Emergency Center after participating in the HCMC Open Club Championship 2025 held early on June 29 at Thong Nhat Stadium.
The first case was a 34-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital because of fainting and convulsions in her limbs after running about 4km. The patient was diagnosed with electrolyte disturbance after overexertion and was admitted and actively monitored in the emergency department.
After receiving oxygen support, electrolyte replacement, and close monitoring of perception and vital signs, the patient's condition improved significantly. The patient was fully awake, responsive, had stable vital signs, and no more seizures.
Case 2 is a 33-year-old male patient, Korean nationality, hospitalized due to low blood pressure and respiratory failure, after running about 3km.
The patient was quickly received by the emergency department team, who urgently provided respiratory support with oxygen therapy, intravenous fluid infusion, and closely monitored consciousness and hemodynamics.
At the same time, perform emergency tests including: blood count, blood biochemistry, electrocardiogram, capillary blood sugar.
As a result, the patient was diagnosed with respiratory failure and myocardial damage due to increased cardiac enzymes after high-intensity exercise.
Thanks to timely emergency care, the patient gradually improved, became alert, had good communication, and his vital signs gradually stabilized. He was admitted to the clinical department for continued treatment.
Doctor Nguyen Kim Long - emergency department, People's Hospital 115 - said that both cases were coordinated smoothly by the night shift in receiving patients, making general assessments, and providing initial treatment.
Thanks for timely detection and proper professional intervention, both patients are stable, with no complications.
Doctor Long warns that many young people mistakenly think that "feeling healthy is enough", but electrolyte, blood pressure, and cardiovascular disorders can be dangerous if not detected early.
Therefore, blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood count, electrolytes, liver and kidney function, and medical history screening related to high-intensity exercise should be checked.
In addition, before participating in the race, you need to eat well, get enough sleep, supplement water and electrolytes properly, avoid drinking alcohol or using stimulants. Practice the habit of warming up properly, use suitable shoes, do not participate if your body is sick, feel tired or is using diuretics.
"Have regular health check-ups, especially before intense physical activities. If you have any unusual symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, or dizziness, go to the nearest medical facility or call 115 immediately," said Dr. Long.
