To effectively prevent African swine fever, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan's family in Phu Loc village, Cam Vu commune (Cam Giang) sprayed disinfectants, disinfected, and cleaned barns.
Strictly implement epidemic prevention procedures
AnEco Livestock and Clean Food Processing Cooperative in Cong Hoa Ward (Chi Linh) has 55 members, raising over 1,000 pigs, of which 150 are sows, the rest are pigs for meat and piglets. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Linh, Director of the Cooperative, disease prevention is a key factor, determining the effectiveness of livestock farming, so all members pay attention to and strictly follow the disease prevention process. The Cooperative proactively provides breeding pigs to members, does not buy pigs from outside to raise. Before weaning pigs from their mothers, all are fully vaccinated to create mass immunity.
The farms are built in closed areas, with disinfectant spraying systems at the entrance and exit gates. Farm workers are not allowed to leave the livestock area. If they do, they must be quarantined for 3 days before re-entering the barn. The farms do not allow strangers into the barn area.
Veterinary staff of Cam Vu commune (Cam Giang) grasp the situation and discuss with people measures to prevent African swine fever.
Having suffered losses due to African swine fever, Mr. Tang Van Dong in Dai Son commune (Tu Ky) is very concerned about disease prevention. Lime powder is sprinkled around the farm, and the barn doors are always closed. He sprays disinfectant twice a week. When selling pigs, Mr. Dong does not allow buyers to enter the farm, but can only watch through cameras or from a distance. When agreeing on a price, Mr. Dong asks the buyer to only catch the pigs for 1-2 days. "I do this to ensure the health of the pigs that have not been consumed. If the catching time is extended to 7-10 days, the buyer of the pigs who are unlucky enough to carry the virus will infect the remaining pigs. In a few days they will get sick, at that time the damage will be huge," Mr. Dong said.
In addition to measures of sanitation, disinfection, sterilization, and limiting people from entering and leaving barns... an important measure that Hai Duong farmers have recently applied is vaccination against African swine fever. Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan in Phu Loc village, Cam Vu commune (Cam Giang) said that he had vaccinated his pigs against African swine fever twice and felt very secure. When vaccinated, the pigs' resistance will increase, so when infected with the virus, their ability to fight the disease will also be better.
Active propaganda
Feeding pigs with adequate nutrients helps the body increase its resistance to disease.
According to the report of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), in the first 6 months of 2025, the whole country had 251 outbreaks of African swine fever, a decrease of more than 61% compared to the same period in 2024. Although the epidemic has been basically controlled, the livestock situation still has many potential concerns.
Hai Duong's total pig herd by early June 2025 reached about 323,100 heads, an increase of 7.1% over the same period in 2024; the output of fresh meat sold in May is estimated at 6,550 tons, an increase of 7%.
In 2019, African swine fever caused great damage to the livestock industry, many households fell into a state of exhaustion, with no more investment capital. Therefore, in recent years, Hai Duong has always focused on prevention measures.
Sprinkling lime powder and leaving the barn empty for a while before restocking is an effective measure to prevent epidemics and African swine fever.
Ms. Dao Thi Thuy, a veterinary officer of Cam Vu commune (Cam Giang) said that compared to other localities, the rate of farms in Cam Vu is quite high, with 41 households raising 10 - 40 pigs/household. The farming is done in the gardens of families, so the risk of African swine fever here is also higher.
To effectively prevent the epidemic, the radio station regularly propagates epidemic prevention measures, the commune veterinary staff grasps the number of pigs raised by each family and advises and guides people on appropriate epidemic prevention measures, and encourages households to get vaccinated. Ms. Dao Thi Thuy said: "The locality has organized African swine fever vaccination for people twice. The first time, only a few people registered, but the second time, the number increased significantly. Currently, most of the farmers in the commune have registered to get African swine fever vaccination for their pigs."
Households raising livestock all cover their barns and limit strangers from entering to prevent disease.
Across the province, the Provincial People's Committee requested specialized agencies to guide localities in general cleaning, spraying disinfectants, and disinfecting. The Department of Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Medicine coordinates and proactively closely monitors the disease situation, especially African swine fever, to ensure early detection, timely warning, and thorough handling of outbreaks, preventing widespread spread of the disease. When an outbreak occurs, sick pigs, suspected sick pigs, and dead pigs must be destroyed...
