At the Lien Thanh village storm shelter, early in the morning of August 26, the Thien Cam commune government and fishermen mobilized cranes to salvage large boats that were swept away by storm No. 5.

“The family’s HT-90272-TS boat has a capacity of 380 CV. We proactively monitored the weather and anchored at the shelter area 3 days before the storm hit. However, due to strong winds, big waves, and strong currents, the boat broke its anchor and crashed into the embankment, causing severe damage. We invested more than 2 billion VND in this boat, most of which was borrowed from the bank, so with such damage, we are worried that it will affect our fishing and our ability to repay the bank. “While there is life, there is hope”, the family spent money to bring the boat back for repair, hoping to minimize the damage” - Mr. Nguyen Trong Viet (residing in Xuan Nam village) sadly said.

Not far away, at the storm shelter area of Cua Nhuong port (Thien Cam commune), dozens of boats are also lying around, lying around like scrap after the sea water receded.

While struggling to bail out water to "save" the boat, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Phuc Hai village, Thien Cam commune said: "1 GPS device, 1 fish finder, 3 engines and all fishing gear were swept away by the waves. Currently, we are trying to check and bring it ashore for repair, hoping to salvage some of our assets."

Mr. Pham Van Tuan - Vice Chairman of Thien Cam Commune People's Committee said: "According to preliminary statistics, the whole commune has more than 40 boats sunk by storm No. 5, severely damaged with total damage of billions of dong. This morning, the local government coordinated with fishermen to focus on towing boats back to shore; promptly provided rescue solutions for boats such as: bailing water, removing cleaning machines, and salvaging fishing gear. Currently, the basic repair work is 50% complete, while some heavy boats have sunk, fishermen and authorities have not found them yet".

Mr. Duong Van Tho - Specialist of the Economic Infrastructure Department, Hai Ninh Ward People's Committee said: "The whole ward has 460 boats, mainly fishing near the shore. As soon as there was information about the formation of a storm at sea, the government proactively coordinated to propagate people to bring boats to anchor in safe locations. However, the storm, big waves and strong winds caused damage to dozens of fishing boats. Currently, the local government and people are inspecting, reviewing the damage, and implementing solutions to minimize damage to fishermen. Regarding the long-term solution, we hope that the authorities will create favorable conditions to support funding to upgrade and complete the infrastructure of fishing ports (invest in the construction of the old Ky Ninh fishing port) to meet the needs of anchoring and sheltering from storms for fishing boats in the area".

According to fisherman Le Van Phung (Hai Ninh ward): The family suffered heavy damage when the 90 CV, 13.2 m long boat was hit by waves and had its bottom completely punctured. Currently, the family is coordinating with the rescue force to inspect and find a solution to "save" the boat.

Currently, local authorities and relevant agencies are continuing to monitor the situation, review and count the damage to fishermen in the localities. On that basis, they will calculate and develop specific and feasible plans to promptly rescue boats and minimize damage to the people.
