Hanoi needs to expand public high schools

TP - Entering the 2025-2026 school year, Hanoi has 2,954 schools at all levels, meeting the needs of nearly 2.3 million students. Of which, the public sector accounts for 2,310 schools, the rest are private. However, at the high school level, the whole city has only more than 200 schools, both public and private, the public rate is only about 5.3%, too low compared to actual needs.

In the new school year, Hanoi has increased by about 60,000 students compared to the previous year. Although 43 new schools were built in one year, there are only 3 high schools, including Do Muoi High School, Phuc Thinh High School and a school in Cau Giay that has not yet come into operation, the rest are mainly focused on preschool and primary school levels.

The lack of public schools makes the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi always stressful, the benchmark scores in inner-city schools are sky-high. There are students who achieve quite high scores, 8 points/subject, but still fail to get into public schools because they choose the wrong choice. This situation shows that the need to open more public high schools is very urgent.

A vice principal of a junior high school in Hanoi said that the most important solution is to invest in building more high schools, and at the same time, take advantage of land funds and vacant office facilities to convert them into schools, reducing pressure on students.

According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, of the 139 school projects under the Department, 90 projects have been approved for investment, 63 have been started, and 11 have been completed. The education sector will continue to advise the city to allocate sufficient resources, review, and re-plan the network of educational facilities, especially at the high school level.

The rate of students admitted to grade 10 public high schools in Hanoi last school year was 64%, while in Ho Chi Minh City it was over 80%.
