Google has not yet disclosed details of the data centers but said it will spend $1 billion between 2025 and 2029. It will help create 14,000 jobs and add $4 billion to Thailand's GDP.
The internet search giant said the new project helps meet growing demand for Google Cloud and AI innovation, as well as the company's digital services such as search, maps, and workspace.
The company's data center is located in an industrial park in Chonburi, while the Google Cloud Region – which includes specialized hardware and software to provide services to the public and private sectors – is located in the capital Bangkok.
Thailand is fast becoming a digital hub for Southeast Asia thanks to its skilled workforce and investment in technology infrastructure from companies like Google, according to Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
He assessed that Google's investment in data centers and clouds in Chonburi and Bangkok is in line with Thailand's Cloud First policy.
Google will partner with Gulf Edge to provide sovereign cloud here.
In Asia, Google has Google Cloud regions in the following countries: Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong (China), Taiwan (China), Korea, and Japan.
Google rival Amazon Web Services is also planning to open a cloud region in Thailand as early as 2025 and invest $5 billion by 2037.
