Google denies rumors of mass Gmail data leak

(Dan Tri) - In the face of rumors spreading on social networks about a huge data leak, causing panic among Gmail users, Google has spoken out to reassure public opinion.

Technology giant Google has officially denied information about a mass data leak on the Gmail platform, while affirming that their email system is still safe and effective.

This announcement was made to reassure users after many confusing rumors appeared on social networks and some media outlets.

In a brief post on The Keyword blog on September 1, Google stressed that its systems are working robustly, with the ability to block “over 99.9% of phishing and malware attempts.”

The company also took this opportunity to recommend that users increase security by switching to using passkeys instead of traditional passwords, a method that is considered more secure.

According to Google, the confusion appears to stem from confusing information between two different events.

The first was an attack on SalesForce, a customer relationship management software company. The hacker group ShinyHunters is believed to be involved in this incident.

Google confirmed it sent warnings to affected accounts, but it was a limited group of users, not all 2.5 billion Gmail users as rumored.

This information was clearly updated by Google on the Threat Intelligence blog on August 8.

Second is media confusion. Some sources appear to have incorrectly linked the SalesForce incident to an old Google post from June promoting the use of passcodes, creating the impression that there was a broader threat to Gmail users.

Additionally, some users on Reddit have reported sophisticated phishing attempts, including fake warning emails from “Mailer-daemon” and calls from the 650 (California) area code impersonating Google. However, these appear to be isolated scams, not signs of a large-scale system breach.

In short, while rumors of a mass data leak have been determined to be false, users still need to remain vigilant.

The golden rule to protecting your account remains: Never click on suspicious links sent to your email and never give your login information to anyone over the phone.
