Billions of Gmail and Google Cloud users around the world are at security risk after an international hacker group claimed to have gained access to Google's databases.

According to a report from Forbes , a hacker group called ShinyHunters was behind the incident. The group broke into the Salesforce system that Google was using, thereby stealing customer data. The search giant later confirmed that the incident had occurred, and said that only general information such as customer names and company names were leaked, while passwords were still protected. However, experts said that this amount of data was still enough to be "material" for sophisticated phishing campaigns.

Early signs of the attacks appeared on Reddit, where users reported receiving calls from people claiming to be Google employees, telling them their accounts were experiencing security issues. During the “support” process, the attackers attempted to initiate an account reset, which allowed them to steal passwords and take control of Gmail.

Several other reports have also indicated that hackers are exploiting a technique called “dangling buckets,” which leverages outdated access addresses to steal data or install malware on Google Cloud.

These tricks are especially dangerous because Gmail currently has more than 2.5 billion users worldwide . Not only businesses, but even individual users can become victims of the above tricks. When a Gmail account is hijacked, users are at risk of having their contacts, archived documents, and other associated services leaked.

Google said the company has rolled out a number of security tools to help users protect their accounts. One of them is Security Checkup, a feature that checks the security status of an account and makes recommendations for how to handle it. Users are also advised to join the Advanced Protection Program, which is designed to block malicious files and limit outside applications from accessing Gmail.

Equally important is the vigilance of the user themselves. Google insists that the company will never call or email to reset passwords or verify accounts, so any contact purporting to be from a support agent with similar content should be considered a sign of a scam.

The data breach continues to raise the alarm about the dangers of cyberattacks on the world's most popular platforms. Gmail is a leading personal and business email service, meaning it is always in the sights of cybercriminals.

In a world where hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, proactively implementing security measures and being cautious about any unusual interactions is the only way to minimize risk.
