- That is Ms. Nong Thuy Huong (born in 1983), a member of the Women's Union of Say village, Dong Tan commune, Huu Lung district. With her agility, daring to think and act, she has applied science and technology to planting and caring for fruit trees in the direction of VietGAP, bringing high economic efficiency, earning an income of 400 million to 500 million VND/year.
In early June 2025, we had the opportunity to visit the fruit garden of Ms. Nong Thuy Huong's family. As soon as we entered the garden, we were overwhelmed by the large longan garden, full of fruit.
Showing us around the garden, Ms. Huong said: I got married at the age of 20. At that time, my husband's family was growing Huong Chi longan with 200 trees. In 2003, the longan garden started to produce fruit. Realizing that the soil and climate conditions were suitable for growing Huong Chi longan, in 2004, I discussed with my family to invest in expanding the planting area.
In 2015, while visiting Hanoi University of Agriculture (now Vietnam National University of Agriculture) to buy seedlings, Ms. Huong learned about a type of longan with high productivity and economic efficiency called Mien longan. Through the information introduced and researched online, realizing that this type of longan has a higher rate of flowering and fruiting than regular longan varieties, she decided to buy seedlings to graft on Huong Chi longan roots for testing.
Ms. Huong shared: At first, due to lack of experience, the family only grafted a few trees. Realizing that the Mien longan grafted on Huong Chi longan roots grew well and had high productivity, the family gradually switched to grafting Mien longan branches on all Huong Chi longan roots in the garden. To date, the family has over 1,000 Mien longan trees grafted on Huong Chi longan roots.
According to Ms. Huong, Mien longan has the characteristics of large, bright yellow fruit, less cracking, sweet, fragrant and is one of the longan varieties with high yield. Mien longan is harvested about 1 month later than the main season of other longan varieties, so the price is usually more stable. On average, each year, her family harvests from 15 to 17 tons of fruit, peaking in years of good harvest, the family harvests over 20 tons. Thanks to being cared for according to VietGAP, her family's longan garden produces large, sweet and beautiful fruit. The main customers are traders from provinces and cities such as: Hanoi , Bac Giang, Bac Ninh...
This year, despite the prolonged drought, because the family has the initiative to irrigate, the longan garden has a high fruit set rate and the fruit is evenly distributed on the tree. It is expected that this year, Ms. Huong's family will harvest over 25 tons of longan fruit.
In addition to growing longan, Ms. Huong's family is also taking care of 2 hectares of acacia forest and about 300 Que Duong and Doan Hung grapefruit trees. On average, each year, the family harvests over 16,000 grapefruits, selling them for 10,000 VND/fruit. From growing fruit trees, Ms. Huong's family has an income of 400 million to 500 million VND/year after deducting expenses.
Not only does she develop her family’s economy, Ms. Huong also enthusiastically shares her experiences and guides women’s association members on longan care techniques when needed. In addition, during the longan harvest season, her family also creates seasonal jobs for 5 to 7 local workers with an income of 250,000 to 300,000 VND/day.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, President of the Women's Union of Dong Tan Commune commented: Ms. Huong is an exemplary female member in local economic development. Not only is she active in developing the family economy, she is also enthusiastic in guiding and sharing experiences with other female members. She also actively participates in volunteer activities and movements launched and organized by the local women's union. She has supported and created conditions for 2 female members in the village to borrow 40 million VND without interest to have capital to invest in production.
With her efforts in developing the family economy, in January 2025, Ms. Nong Thuy Huong was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for being a farmer with an effective economic development model, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction and job creation for local workers.
