Experts say that imports will only decrease when domestic production improves. However, the possibility of farmers returning to pepper cultivation in the short term is low, because the profits from pepper are still not comparable to those of coffee and durian. It is expected that it will take 3-4 years, when coffee and durian prices drop sharply, for farmers to return to investing in pepper. After that, it will take another 3-4 years for acreage and production to increase again, thereby reducing dependence on imports and stabilizing domestic supply.
Pepper price today August 19, 2025 in the country
This morning, pepper prices in key production areas in Vietnam did not fluctuate much, remaining flat, fluctuating around 140,000 - 143,000 VND/kg.
Specifically, pepper prices in Dak Lak and Dak Nong remain unchanged at 143,000 VND/kg.
Other localities such as Gia Lai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau also remained unchanged, maintaining at 141,000 VND/kg. Binh Phuoc maintained at 140,000 VND/kg.

Vietnam’s pepper output, which peaked at 290,000 tonnes in 2019, has been steadily declining as farmers have stopped planting new crops and switched to more profitable crops such as durian and coffee. This has left domestic inventories and harvests insufficient to meet export demand.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the first 7 months of the year, Vietnam imported 31,472 tons of pepper, a sharp increase of 58.5% compared to the same period in 2024. Brazil, Cambodia and Indonesia are the main suppliers. This massive import is aimed at curbing domestic price increases and ensuring supply for export. However, the high price of imported pepper also forces businesses to spend a larger amount.
