Pepper acreage in An Giang is expected to decrease from nearly 500 hectares to about 390 hectares by the end of 2025, down nearly 100 hectares compared to three years ago. However, some farmers are still persistent in maintaining pepper cultivation using new methods. In Phu Quoc, Ms. Le Thi Yen Tuyet applies an organic production model, using fertilizer from fermented fish sauce and vegetables, achieving a profit of over 400 million VND/year thanks to the price of black pepper (180,000 VND/kg) and red pepper (280,000-300,000 VND/kg). However, she faces challenges from nematodes, causing her to lose 100-200 pepper plants each year, but she is still determined to maintain the breed and traditional profession.

In Hoa Thuan commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Mau, Director of Hoa Phu Cooperative, once intended to abandon 1 hectare of pepper garden but decided to keep it by raising bees and using compost. With the current price of black pepper at 190,000 VND/kg, he earns about 200 million VND/year. Pepper prices have doubled compared to three years ago, but many places no longer have pepper gardens to benefit from because they were destroyed when prices were low.

Mr. Mau proposed that the government support farmers to restore the pepper industry through investment in growing area codes, automatic irrigation systems, transfer of organic production techniques and building links between farmers, cooperatives and businesses to ensure stable output.

The US decision to impose a 50% countervailing duty on Brazilian pepper and a 32% duty on Indonesian pepper, effective from August 2025, has caused global pepper prices to fall by $100-200/ton in week 28, according to data from Ptexim. In this context, Vietnam stands out thanks to its 20% duty, combined with limited global supply and the lowest domestic inventory in the past 5-6 years, creating a big advantage.

The International Pepper Community (IPC) said that Vietnamese black pepper prices decreased slightly, while white pepper prices remained stable. Malaysian pepper prices remained unchanged, Indonesian pepper prices decreased, and Sri Lanka pepper prices increased slightly. Vietnamese farmers are holding onto their stocks waiting for prices to rise, while demand from major markets such as the US, EU and India remains steady. Some Brazilian associations have proposed suspending exports to wait for prices to rise, similar to the strategy they used previously.

Accounting for more than 60% of the global market share and with the new crop season still far away, Vietnam is facing a great opportunity to consolidate its leading position, especially in the US market, which focuses on stable and sustainable supply.
