The price of rebar for July delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange today (June 29) decreased slightly by 0.07% to 2,985 yuan/ton, while the contract for March 2026 increased by 19 yuan to 2,990 yuan/ton. Most other steel products on the exchange also increased slightly, except for wire rod, which decreased slightly.

In the raw materials market, the July iron ore futures contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange rose 1 yuan to 720.5 yuan/ton. The September contract, the most traded, also rose 0.64% to 705.5 yuan/ton.

On the Singapore Exchange, the July delivery price increased by 0.58 USD, to 93.32 USD/ton.

Iron ore futures posted their biggest weekly gain since May 16, helped by falling inventories of iron ore and finished steel in China, despite concerns over anti-dumping duties from Taiwan.

Regarding trade, Taiwan's Ministry of Finance said on June 27 that Taiwan will impose anti-dumping duties of up to 20.15% on hot-rolled steel coil (HRC) and beer produced in China for the next four months, starting July 3.

According to data from SteelHome, total iron ore inventories at Chinese ports fell 0.74% week-on-week to 133.6 million tonnes as of June 27. “The decline in port iron ore inventories has been a supportive factor for prices, helping to protect them from further declines,” ANZ analysts said.

Meanwhile, data from Mysteel showed that finished steel inventories held by Chinese traders continued to decline in the week of June 20-26, marking the seventh consecutive week of decline. However, the pace of decline slowed compared to the previous week, which is believed to be due to increased output at domestic steel mills.

Amidst the volatile international market, China’s steel industry has also seen remarkable changes in the environment and energy sector. According to data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), the total emissions of its member companies increased by 17.9% year-on-year in May 2025. However, SO₂, particulate matter, and NOx emissions decreased by 10.4%, 9.3%, and 11.6% year-on-year, respectively.

Total energy consumption decreased by 2.1% compared to the same period last year, but energy consumption per ton of steel increased by 2.1%, of which individual electricity consumption increased by 5.2%. Total electricity consumption increased by 7.6%, self-produced electricity output increased by 14.3%, accounting for a larger proportion in the energy structure. Notably, clean electricity output increased by 48.7% compared to the same period, of which wind power increased by 451.6% and solar power increased by 50.2%.

Regarding water, consumption increased slightly by 0.4%, water extraction increased by 1.6%, while the water reuse rate decreased slightly by 0.02 percentage points to 98.38%. Water use per ton of steel increased by 3.4% to 2.41 m³. Wastewater decreased by 1.8%, COD decreased by 3.2%, and ammonia decreased sharply by 12.7%.

The reuse rate of steelmaking slag, blast furnace slag and iron dust remained above 98%, while the utilization rate of combustible gases, such as blast furnace gas, converter gas and coke oven gas, also exceeded 98%.

Overall, in 2024, China's steel industry's total emissions increased by 4.1% year-on-year, mainly due to the increase in blast furnace capacity - which has higher emissions than electric arc furnaces - despite a decline in steel output for the year.
