Vietnamese durian prices crash as exports to China stagnate
The difficult situation of exporting durian to the Chinese market has strongly affected the domestic price of durian, causing this item to decrease sharply. Since the beginning of 2025, the amount of durian pouring into domestic markets has been at the lowest price in the past three years.
During the period 2022 - 2024, durian prices skyrocketed due to the huge import demand from China. At one point, the retail price of whole durian reached VND270,000/kg, while Ri6 and Monthong durian pulp cost nearly VND850,000/kg, but the domestic market was still in a state of scarcity. Because of the high price, many consumers could only look at it but did not dare to buy it, considering this a fruit for high-income customers.
However, by 2025, the market has changed significantly. The stagnation of durian exports to China has caused a large amount of inventory to flow into the domestic market, causing prices to plummet. Many retail stores in Hanoi are currently offering grade 1 Ri6 durian for only about 55,000 VND/kg, while Ri6 durian pulp costs between 150,000 and 200,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , this year's durian output is expected to reach about 1.5 million tons, mainly harvested from April to September. However, the Chinese market - the main consumer - has sharply reduced its import volume. In the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam's durian export value only reached about 130 million USD, a sharp decrease compared to the 500 million USD in the same period last year.
Pressure from oversupply combined with difficulties in exporting has caused a large amount of durian to remain unsold in the domestic market. Many experts predict that durian prices may continue to fall, especially when the main harvest season in the Central Highlands is about to enter its peak period in the coming time.
