Durian price news today April 10, 2025

Today, April 10, 2025, durian prices in major growing areas in Vietnam are recorded as relatively stable, but the short-term outlook shows clear signs of differentiation, especially in the context of Thai durian exports facing difficulties due to strict inspection regulations from China.

According to the Bangkok Post on April 8, more than 1,000 durian farmers and exporters in Chanthaburi province, Thailand, held a protest demanding government support after China suspended the operations of two durian quality testing laboratories. Since early 2025, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) has implemented strict regulations requiring all imported durians to be tested for the presence of Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) and cadmium – two banned substances due to health risks.

Currently, Thailand has only four laboratories accredited by GACC, while five others are awaiting approval. This has led to a risk of cargo congestion, especially as the peak harvest season for Thai durians is about to begin in May. Many shipments have been rejected despite Thailand’s assertion that BY2 is not used, raising concerns about the reputation of Thai durians – which have a large market share in China (about 66-75% in recent years).

Forecast of durian price trends in the future

Experts say that durian prices will differentiate in the coming time:

Premium products: Varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn and Thai durian are expected to maintain high prices (VND140,000 - 180,000/kg or more) thanks to stable demand from the export market, especially if Thailand continues to face difficulties.

Medium and bulk purchases: May face pressure to drop below VND60,000/kg if main crop supply increases sharply from mid-April, combined with export barriers to China.

The current price stability is a positive sign, but developments in the Chinese market – which consumes more than 90% of Vietnam’s durian exports – will have a major impact. If Thailand fails to resolve the inspection issue, Vietnam could take advantage of the opportunity to increase its market share, pushing the price of good durian higher in the coming weeks.
