Northern pig prices regain momentum, still maintaining the highest level in the country

* The live pig market in the Northern region recorded an increase of 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg.

Of which, Hung Yen, Phu Tho and Thai Binh provinces adjusted slightly up 1,000 VND/kg to 57,000 VND/kg.

With the same increase, Tuyen Quang province also raised the price of live pigs to 56,000 VND/kg - equal to Lao Cai, Nam Dinh and Vinh Phuc.

Traders in Thai Nguyen and Hanoi are currently buying live pigs at 57,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg compared to the same time yesterday morning.

Today's live pig price in the North is around 56,000 - 57,000 VND/kg.

* Pig prices in the Central and Central Highlands regions increased slightly by VND 1,000/kg in some places.

Specifically, the provinces and cities including Thanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa adjusted the price of live pigs to about 53,000 - 55,000 VND/kg, depending on the region.

Other localities maintained stable pig prices this morning.

Currently, the price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions is around 52,000 - 56,000 VND/kg.

* In the Southern region, pig prices increased following the general market trend.

Specifically, the provinces of Binh Duong, Dong Thap, An Giang, Ca Mau and Bac Lieu all increased by 1,000 VND/kg, currently the price of live pigs is between 52,000 - 55,000 VND/kg (depending on the region).

After increasing by 2,000 VND/kg, live pigs in Long An, Vinh Long and Can Tho are being traded at 54,000 - 55,000 VND/kg.

The price of live pigs in the Southern region today fluctuates between 52,000 - 56,000 VND/kg.

* According to the explanation of the Department of Animal Husbandry, recently, the price of live pigs has been at or below the production cost because people's purchasing power has slightly decreased while supply has increased in September, October and November 2023 because large enterprises and farms maintain a fairly high pig herd.

Another cause is that African swine fever is still developing unfavorably, putting the pig farming industry at risk.

Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong, Chairman of the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association, said that the difficulties of the pig farming industry will continue in 2024 when supply is still abundant but purchasing power has not recovered. Meanwhile, smuggled pigs are plentiful and quite cheap, putting more pressure on domestic pork products.

Regarding long-term solutions, Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong said that the domestic pig farming industry must find ways to reduce costs to increase competitiveness with products in import channels.
