The global coffee market is facing a number of factors. Robusta and Arabica prices have been rising steadily recently, reaching their highest levels in about three months, as inventories on exchanges have steadily declined and new supplies have not met expectations. A decline in coffee production in Brazil due to weather effects is also an important factor.
The US’s increase in tariffs of up to 50% on imports from Brazil has forced US buyers to look for alternative sources of supply from other countries, contributing to higher prices. However, the US government ’s exemptions on some other Indonesian agricultural products have not yet applied to coffee, which could change in the future.
Faced with rising prices, American consumers are increasingly switching from drinking coffee at cafes to brewing it at home to save money, which could affect demand.
A few farmers’ experimental efforts to grow coffee in California could open up a new supply, despite high production costs. Giant coffee chains like Starbucks are also making adjustments to save on operating costs, such as cutting back on roasting schedules.
