Coffee price today 8/19/2025: Positive price increase

Last week, domestic coffee prices continued to rise, while the London exchange also had 4/5 trading sessions with increased prices. This development has made many people worry that profit-taking pressure may appear this week. However, in the current context, it is not surprising that coffee prices continue to rise.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Long, Director of Vietnam Coffee Academy Joint Stock Company (VCA) (Gia Lai province), the main reason for this increase in coffee prices is due to a shortage of supply. Mr. Long emphasized that if there is an excess of goods in the market, it will be difficult to push prices up.

In addition to supply and demand factors, Mr. Long also pointed out the participation of sharks, which contributed to strongly affecting prices. Meanwhile, the amount of coffee in the hands of farmers is not much, creating more advantages for the big guys in controlling prices.

Mr. Long predicted that in about 2 months, Vietnam will start the harvest season, and after 3 months, the supply will become abundant thanks to this year's favorable weather. At that time, the price of coffee is forecast to fluctuate between 70,000 and 100,000 VND/kg, unless there are unusual weather fluctuations in Brazil that affect the global supply.

World coffee prices today

On the London Stock Exchange, the online price of Robusta coffee futures for September 2025 delivery closed yesterday at $4,142/ton, down 1.4% ($59/ton) from yesterday. The November 2025 futures contract fell 1.43% ($58/ton) to $4,009/ton.

Meanwhile, on the New York Stock Exchange, the price of Arabica coffee for September 2025 delivery decreased by 1.16% (3.95 US cents/pound) compared to yesterday, to 337.7 US cents/pound. The contract for December 2025 delivery decreased by 1.24% (4.15 US cents/pound), reaching 330.05 US cents/pound.

Last week, global coffee prices rose to a two-month high. So today, coffee prices are slightly lower simply due to short-term profit-taking. Frost in Brazil, record low inventories and logistics bottlenecks due to global tariffs have been strong drivers of the recent rise in coffee prices.

Richard Volpe, a former USDA economist and now a professor at Cal Poly University (USA), said that world coffee prices are still at their highest level in the past two months. According to him, this upward trend is likely to continue for the next 3 to 5 months because production and operating costs continue to escalate.

Volpe said the producer price index (PPI) is reflecting a larger increase in wholesale coffee prices than in retail, suggesting that larger increases are still ahead. In addition, tariffs on steel and aluminum could increase the cost of packaging, processing equipment and storage of coffee, adding to the pressure on the supply chain.

Robusta coffee prices rose sharply as data from Cecafé showed that Brazilian exports continued to decline, while supplies from Vietnam were not abundant as the new harvest season was still several months away. Heavy rains also disrupted the harvest in Indonesia. Experts predict that if the September Robusta contract on the London exchange remains above $4,300/ton, the bullish signal will continue.
