Domestic coffee prices today, July 16, 2025, in the Central Highlands region recovered strongly, fluctuating between 94,200 - 94,700 VND/kg.

Accordingly, traders in Dak Lak province purchased coffee at 94,600 VND/kg, an increase of 6,300 VND/kg compared to yesterday.

Similarly, coffee prices in Dak Nong province (old) increased by VND6,300/kg compared to yesterday, currently at VND94,600/kg.

In Lam Dong province, coffee prices increased slightly to 94,200 VND/kg, an increase of 6,200 VND/kg.

The increase in domestic coffee prices is mainly due to the impact of trade tensions between the US and Brazil – the world’s largest coffee producer. The US’s threat to impose import tariffs of up to 50% on nearly all coffee imported from Brazil has prompted US roasters to increase purchases ahead of the new tariffs, putting upward pressure on prices in the global coffee market.

In addition, the risk of disruption in coffee supply from Brazil to the US – the world’s largest coffee consumer – has also increased concerns about supply, causing domestic coffee prices to increase. Meanwhile, Brazilian farmers are selling coffee more slowly than the average of many years, while in Vietnam, coffee growers are also limiting sales due to falling prices due to the impact of a bumper crop in Brazil, contributing to a temporary shortage of domestic coffee supply, pushing up coffee prices.

Coffee prices today were strongly affected by trade tensions between the US and Brazil - the world's largest coffee producer. According to Reuters, the US's threat to impose a 50% tax on nearly all coffee imports from Brazil caused coffee prices to skyrocket in the first session of the week, as US roasters rushed to buy before the new tax could be applied on August 1.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has expressed a desire to find a diplomatic solution, but has also warned of a reciprocal response if the US does impose tariffs. The US is the world's largest coffee consumer, with 33% of its consumption coming from Brazil.

A U.S. coffee trader said that when the 50 percent tariff goes into effect, roasters will rush to buy all the Brazilian coffee that has arrived at the current 10 percent tariff, potentially canceling existing contracts. Wholesale green coffee prices in the U.S. market now factor in both the current tariff and the new tariff if no deal is reached.

If the 50% tariff is applied, almost all of Brazil's coffee exports to the US will be halted, while the US will have difficulty finding alternative sources with equivalent volumes and prices.

Brokerage expert Michael Nugent said the market was in a calculated pause for behind-the-scenes negotiations, warning of the possibility of sharp price fluctuations and advising investors to prepare for sudden and erratic movements.

The new tariffs could further escalate coffee prices in the US, dampening domestic demand and putting pressure on global coffee prices in the long term as more abundant supplies shift to other export markets.

Meanwhile, Brazilian farmers had sold 31% of their 2025-26 crop as of July 9, compared with a five-year average of 38% over the same period, according to consultancy Safras & Mercado. In Vietnam, the world’s largest robusta grower, farmers are still holding back on sales as prices fall amid favorable harvest conditions for Brazil’s record robusta crop.
