It was the first time the two teams had met in an official competition. Atletico beat PSG 2-1, becoming the rare team to defeat the European champions last season.
Therefore, PSG is eager for revenge and aims to end its perfect season by winning the FIFA Club World Cup. And facing Atletico Madrid is the best way for PSG to show its ambition. The battle between the two teams is also considered the most notable and focal match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup group stage.
As the reigning Champions League champions, PSG are considered the favorites. But the difficulties they face are also greater. Up to 18 PSG first-team players have been called up by the national team to play in the international matches in early June.
Most of them are pillars who have to work hard for both teams (club and national team) such as Dembele, Vitinha, Ruiz, Hakimi, Marquinhos... Atletico also has them, but the number is only 10. The physical problem that coach Luis Enrique (PSG) has to face is therefore bigger than that of his colleague Diego Simeone on the other side of the front line.
The battle between PSG and Atletico Madrid promises to also decide the race for tickets in Group B. This group also includes Brazil's Botafogo and the US's Seattle Sounders. In terms of squad value, PSG ranks 3rd out of 32 teams participating in the FIFA Club World Cup, with a total player value of 1.05 billion euros (according to Transfermarkt). Atletico Madrid ranks 8th with 516 million euros, followed by Botafogo in 16th place (145 million euros), and Seattle in 23rd place (52 million euros).
Based on these numbers, PSG and Atletico cannot be too complacent. The Brazilian teams are always full of untapped talent, promising to play as well as the established stars, once they have risen. Meanwhile, Seattle has the home advantage.
The team that wins the big match tomorrow morning promises to have one foot in the knockout round, while the losing team will be under great pressure from the two giants of America.
