North Korea's launch appeared to have been rushed and it may take at least several weeks to fix the problem before it can launch again, a South Korean lawmaker said Wednesday, citing South Korea's intelligence agency.

In a statement about the launch, KCNA news agency said a rocket carrying a military reconnaissance satellite called "Malligyong-1" fell into the sea after an accident. The launch was later criticized by South Korea, Japan and the United States.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said any launch by Pyongyang using ballistic missile technology would violate Security Council resolutions.

In her statement, Ms Kim said criticism of Wednesday's launch was "self-contradictory" because the US and other countries had launched "thousands of satellites".

In a separate KCNA statement, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong criticized US-led military exercises in the region, including a multinational anti-nuclear naval drill.
