Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia often have abnormal accumulations of the protein alpha-synuclein, according to research published in the journal Nature Medicine by Professor Hattori Nobutaka of Juntendo University's Faculty of Medicine. The discovery of protein particles in the blood is believed to have led to early diagnosis of the disease.

The team developed a technique to efficiently detect alpha-synuclein particles in patient serum using a protein separation method using an antibody that binds only to the abnormal protein. Using this method, the abnormal protein was detected in over 90% of people with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia patients.

Meanwhile, less than 10% of people without the disease have the abnormal protein. The team also believes that the structure of synuclein granules varies depending on the type of disease, so the study could lead to simpler diagnostic methods that could help reduce the burden on patients.
