Dam Rong honey pineapple: Differentiating value and journey to establish certification mark

DNVN - In the diverse picture of Vietnamese agricultural products, each product that wants to go far must possess its own identity, along with a methodical development strategy. With Dam Rong honey pineapple, the difference comes not only from favorable natural conditions or characteristic sweetness, but also from the determination to position the brand and protect intellectual property rights.

Specialties from the red soil of the Central Highlands

It is no coincidence that honey pineapple has been identified as the new main crop of Dam Rong. In the context of many pineapple growing areas across the country facing difficulties due to poor soil, pests and unstable prices, Dam Rong honey pineapple has emerged as a native product with its own distinct advantages.

That is the difference in ecological conditions. Dam Rong is a unique climate transition zone, combining the subtropical climate of the highlands and the tropical climate of the lowlands. The pineapple growing areas are mainly in the communes of Ro Men, Da R'Sal, Lieng Srong - where the average temperature is 23-25ºC, the basalt soil has a thick arable layer, and the rainfall is high and stable. Thanks to these conditions, the pineapple trees grow well, the fruit is large, dark yellow, less fibrous, high brix, rich sweetness, and natural aroma. These characteristics are highly appreciated by consumers and are difficult to find in pineapples grown in the plains or sandy soil.

Besides, there are differences in the way of exploitation and development. Dam Rong honey pineapple is mainly intercropped in cashew gardens, on sloping hills or stable forestry land, not only effectively utilizing the land but also helping to prevent erosion, limit leaching in the rainy season, in line with the policy of agricultural development associated with environmental protection. Notably, this type of tree is easy to grow, low cost, requires little fertilizer investment, but yields 13-18 tons/ha, profit after costs reaches 150-180 million VND/ha, much higher than cashew, coffee or cassava trees in the locality.

Currently, the entire Dam Rong district has about 40 hectares of honey pineapple. The largest area belongs to the Ro Men Pineapple Cooperative with 23 hectares, of which 17 hectares have been harvested, with an estimated output of more than 400 tons/year. Dam Rong honey pineapple is a fresh fruit purchased by establishments in Lam Dong and neighboring provinces at a stable price of 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. The market favors it because of its unique flavor, high uniformity, easy processing, suitable for making pineapple jam, dried, or pure juice.

Sustainable competitive advantage

In response to the need to expand production and increase product value, Dam Rong district has implemented the project “Building, managing and developing the Dam Rong Honey Pineapple certification label”. This is a strategic activity to protect product value, control quality and enhance the brand of local agricultural products.

Dam Rong honey pineapple has big fruit and a sweeter taste than many other growing regions.

The certification label is established based on a strict set of criteria: fruit shape, size, Brix level, color, taste, and food safety indicators such as pesticide residues and heavy metals.

In addition, there is a QR code system for traceability, a map of the certified area, a growing area code, and clear regulations for using the brand. This ensures that only qualified products grown in the planned area can use the brand "Dam Rong Honey Pineapple", avoiding the situation of mixing and counterfeiting the brand.

Being granted a protection certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) is a stepping stone for the product to participate in supermarket chains, OCOP channels and aim for export, especially niche markets with high requirements for traceability such as Japan, Korea or the Middle East.

From differentiation to brand value

Establishing a certification mark is just the starting point. To exploit the inherent distinctive value of Dam Rong honey pineapple, a synchronous development strategy is needed, from planning the growing area, supporting consumption, to brand communication.

On the government side, it is necessary to continue supporting the issuance of growing area codes, technical training, supporting certification costs, and linking with consumption enterprises.

On the farmers' side, it is necessary to comply with VietGAP standard farming processes, use the right varieties and techniques, and ensure product uniformity.

On the business side, it is necessary to boldly invest in preliminary processing, packaging, and creating value-added processed products from honey pineapple such as jam, dried pineapple, juice, etc.

Regarding communication, it is necessary to put product images on digital platforms, connect with e-commerce platforms and regional and national trade promotion events.

Dam Rong honey pineapple is a typical example of the unique value of nature, people and production methods. The establishment of the certification mark is an important milestone, affirming the quality and position of the product, while creating a solid foundation for Dam Rong honey pineapple to develop sustainably, aiming to become a new key product of the Central Highlands.
