* Put capital into production

More than 20 years ago, Mr. Duong Thai Hoang and his wife in Phu Huu hamlet, Phu Tam commune (Can Tho city) started their business with 2,000 square meters of rice land. After each crop, the capital they earned was just enough to invest in seeds and agricultural materials for the next crop.

With the desire to invest in expanding the cultivated area and buying machinery to expand production, Mr. Hoang proactively sought out preferential credit programs from Agribank . Initially, they were only small loans, but thanks to effective business and having enough to eat and save, after each crop, he confidently borrowed larger amounts.

Mr. Duong Thai Hoang (3rd from left) shares about his family's economic model with Agribank officials.

Sharing about the journey of expanding production scale thanks to the support of capital from Agribank, Mr. Duong Thai Hoang said: "I have been associated with Agribank since around 2005. Initially, I borrowed capital to produce rice seeds, then gradually switched to gardening and trading agricultural materials. I had surplus business to invest further, and when I lacked working capital, I borrowed more from the bank. Thanks to that, from the initial 2,000m2 of land, I have now expanded to 20ha of rice land, 1ha of fruit garden, with dryers, seed separator machines...".

Mr. Hoang invested in more rice dryers to serve production.

In addition to commercial rice production, Mr. Hoang cooperates with the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute to participate in experimental rice planting, linking production and consumption of rice seeds. On average, each crop, he supplies about 200 tons of rice seeds to people in the region.

According to Mr. Hoang, cultivating rice seeds requires mastery of techniques, systematic investment and higher profits than commercial rice. Thanks to timely capital support from Agribank, he is confident in investing in expanding the area of rice seed cultivation.

"I produce and supply rice seeds while trading in materials, so I often let farmers "buy on credit" at the beginning of the season and collect money at the end of the season. Thanks to preferential capital from Agribank, I have both revolving investment capital and support for the people," Mr. Hoang shared.

Currently, Mr. Hoang is being granted a loan limit of 4 billion VND by Agribank Thuan Hoa Soc Trang Branch, with preferential interest rates for agriculture. This capital helps him not only maintain production but also continue to invest in 2 electric drying ovens with a capacity of 10 tons, a modern seed separation system, etc. On average, each year, the profit from Mr. Hoang's family's fruit garden is about 240 million VND, and the profit from the rice seed business is also over 1.6 billion VND.

Timely replenishment of resources

Explaining his choice to stick with Agribank for many years, Mr. Hoang shared: "When borrowing money from a bank, low interest rates are not enough. There were times when I needed to increase the limit, the branch resolved it very quickly. I often sell agricultural materials to people on credit, and collect the money after 4-6 months. Without the bank's support, I would not be able to carry on for a long time."

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dac, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cu Lao Dung Commune, Can Tho City, said: "The local economy mainly relies on agriculture, mainly sugarcane, fruit trees and aquaculture. Accompanying the local government in developing the household economy, Agribank Cu Lao Dung Soc Trang Branch has provided timely support in terms of capital for farming households, especially cooperatives and cooperatives... Thanks to this credit source, the commune's agricultural restructuring project has achieved many positive results."

From 2021 to present, Agribank Cu Lao Dung Soc Trang Branch has disbursed an average of over 100 billion VND/year, with a current total outstanding loan of over 900 billion VND. According to Mr. Mai Van Thanh, Director of Agribank Cu Lao Dung Soc Trang Branch, the unit's lending ratio to the "three agriculture" sector always accounts for about 99% of the total outstanding loan, with many preferential interest rate programs for farmers and small businesses. In addition to providing credit, the Branch also participates in social security activities such as building houses for the poor, supporting school repairs, building rural roads, etc.

As of July 2025, the total outstanding loans of Agribank branches in the Mekong Delta reached over VND 286,000 billion, with the ratio of loans to agriculture and rural areas accounting for over 81%. Agribank Soc Trang Branch alone achieved a total outstanding loan of over VND 16,000 billion, of which loans to agriculture and rural areas accounted for over 75%. This figure shows Agribank's long-term commitment to the mission of accompanying the development of "three rural areas" in the Mekong Delta.

It can be seen that preferential capital from Agribank is not only disbursed promptly but also becomes the core driving force to help people rotate capital, expand production and increase the value of agricultural products. The trust and loyalty of long-term customers and the total outstanding debt mainly focused on agricultural and rural loans show that the credit flow is going in the right direction and promoting positive effects. This affirms that Agribank is not only a financial institution, but also a reliable and indispensable partner in the socio-economic development process of the Mekong Delta.

Over 37 years of establishment and development, Agribank has always maintained sustainable growth, affirming its role as a key bank providing credit capital to serve the development of "Tam Nong" with the proportion of loans to the agricultural, farmer and rural areas always reaching about 65% of the total outstanding loans. Particularly in the Mekong Delta region, outstanding loans to the agricultural and rural areas account for up to 82% of the total outstanding loans.

Outstanding rice loans of Agribank branches in the region are distributed to all stages in the rice value chain. Specifically, outstanding loans for rice cultivation reached VND4,035 billion; loans for rice production and processing reached VND6,610 billion; loans for domestic rice wholesale and retail reached VND28,751 billion and loans for rice export reached VND1,104 billion.
